Skiathos, Greece

My other half and I weren’t lured to the shimmering shores of Skiathos by the Mamma Mia! hype. Instead, we fancied somewhere authentically Greek and somewhat lesser known compared to its big-island siblings. And when we arrived, we got just that. Picture vast, turquoise water, lush greenery and cute whitewashed buildings studded with coloured window shutters. The Greek getaway vision we’d hoped for after reading glossy travel mags. We stayed in Koukounaries, which meant we had its main beach on our doorstep – and we made the most of it for lazing on the sand and paddleboarding. Although exploring Skiathos Town’s many shops by day and hitting its trendy bars by night had loads of appeal, our highlight was resoundingly going quad biking. Hiring one to head off-road and over to hidden coves was incredible. The sense of freedom and adventure was unrivalled, and we saw scenery that outdid postcards tenfold. Got a sweet tooth? Jot down ‘orange pie’ – this oozy, syrupy honey cake was utterly divine and my favourite.

Nice, France

Izmir, Turkey

My New Year’s resolution for 2024 was to visit 12 countries in 12 months, so it’s definitely been jam-packed. One of my favourite places was Nice. I’ve never been to the South of France before, and I fell in love with it. The city itself is full of things to see and do, from the beach club-studded promenade to the masterpiece-stuffed museums. It’s really easy to tick off the other villages along the coast, thanks to the handy train line. I’d recommend carving out some time for a stroll around Antibes and Cannes.

I also really enjoyed my work trip to Izmir in May. I’ve only been to Turkey once, when I was younger, so it was great to return as an adult. We stayed in Kusadasi, and it was an ideal base for exploring. A trip to the ancient city of Ephesus and a 4x4 safari were two of the highlights. The food was fab too!

Tuscany, Italy

A long-awaited family trip to Tuscany was the highlight of my 2024, and the vast Italian countryside lived up to expectations and then some. We stayed near the coast, and while it was the perfect location to explore inland and tick off everywhere on our itinerary, it was also a hotspot for incredible food! We saw fresh seafood caught every morning from our balcony that looked out to the sea on one side and onto the quaint river passages and rows of tiny bridges on the other. Having a car was a real must for us to explore the likes of San Gimignano and Lucca, and as we twisted our way through the cypress-lined roads, passing stretching vineyards decorated with bright purple grapes, I was glad to not miss any of the jaw-dropping scenery.

While Florence’s beauty was astounding and Pisa’s architecture impressive, Lucca was my favourite place on our Tuscan tour. Tackle the climb up the Torre Guinigi tower for panoramic views that you’ll never forget. A special mention goes out to Lerici, a coastal town that provided the one beach day we got over the course of the week. The cliff faces dotted with pastel-coloured houses and dinky boats bobbing in the marina will leave you feeling more like you’re in Cinque Terre than Tuscany.

Salzburg, Austria

I’m not sure how I ended up with two active holidays on my 2024 travel calendar, being not the most sports-loving person, but here we are. My friends and I kicked off spring with a skiing trip to Austria. Yep, you read that right, spring. For the third year in a row, we’ve been taking to the slopes in early spring – less people, cheaper accommodation and T-shirt weather back in the resort… what’s not to love about it? And there’s plenty of snow in the Austrian resorts then. We stayed in an apartment in Kaltenbach, but luckily the Zillertal Superskipass gives you access to all resorts in the region, so we swapped our skiing grounds every day. There’s a free ski bus and a cute train, winding through the mountainous scenery, that can take you there, although we opted for Jet2Carhire this time. Many Aperols, layers and exactly one black run later, we had a day in Salzburg before the flight back. The hometown of Mozart is dreamy, but my favourite part has to be landing and taking off with the views of the Austrian Alps.

Tenerife

This year I returned to a firm favourite – Tenerife! After visiting my family here for the past 15 years, I’m pretty familiar with the island, so I like to discover hidden gems and lesser-known spots! We stayed in Los Abrigos, a dinky fishing village just next to Golf del Sur. There are heaps of fish restaurants, along with a peaceful beach and loads of great bars. It’s near the airport too, making it easy to grab a hire car – a must if you want to explore both the south and north of the island! I’d recommend Playa de Benijo – the drive through the volcanic mountains is absolutely stunning, but the view down to the beach is even better. You’ll see a real contrast between the Saharan sands in the south compared to the lush landscapes and black-sand beaches up in the north. Be sure to make time to visit Garachico and La Laguna too – this is where you’ll find a traditional taste of Tenerife.
