It’s no surprise that the world capital of gelato gets the nod of approval from families. But beyond its slurp-tastic treats, there are beaches to frolic on, next-level attractions to uncover and an A-Z of activities to get stuck into.
Lake Garda
For non-stop adventures
This handsome part of northern Italy has a different tale to tell in each direction you head. Kids will enjoy the novelty of chugging across the lake from village to village. Think a morning in lemon-tree-draped Limone, an afternoon biking around Bardolino... And the lakeside promenades make perfect pushchair strolls.
Go all out at Gardaland
No trip to Lake Garda would be complete without visiting one of the country’s most iconic theme parks. Strap in for rollicking rollercoasters, take a seat for crowd-hushing shows and discover over 5,000 aquatic species at the Sea Life aquarium. The entertainment’s been turned up a notch for 2023, with a new Jumanji-themed ride and LEGOLAND® Water Park.
Sardinia
For outdoor pursuits
From the seven unspoilt islands of La Maddalena Archipelago National Park to the amazing Asinara National Park, Sardinia’s storybook stuff for active families. If you’re visiting with older kids, go on an organised hiking tour of Gola di Gorropu, the island’s answer to the Grand Canyon. Just be sure to pack comfy shoes and plenty of water.
Don’t miss
Grotta di Nettuno is a stunning cave system near Alghero, with beautifully lit stalactites and stalagmites. It’s only accessible by boat, but that’s all part of the fun and makes for a great day out.
Lido di Jesolo
For seafront thrills
Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside, and Lido di Jesolo is one of Italy’s finest. More than 15km of Blue Flag-rated coastline means this area’s in pole position for beaches. Discover all the fun of the fair at New Jesolandia, where you can catch a ride on the giant Ferris wheel or try your luck on the traditional game stands. Or how about mixing up your days and checking out the local cycle routes and museums?
Veering towards Venice?
Curb your appetite for history with a visit to none other than the floating city herself. ‘Magical’ doesn’t even begin to describe the canals, Gothic architecture and blink-and-you’ll-miss-them bookshops. Our must-see trio? St. Mark's Square, Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs.
