Europe’s beautiful boot is a destination that needs no introduction. Come for the cuisine and the culture but stay for the natural beauty that beckons from every direction. Whether you’re sprawling on beaches in every shade of sunshine or sipping wine among olive groves, Italy’s not short of camera-stealing scenery. Here are some of the gems to add to your itinerary...
Sardinia
Sardinia’s often labelled a micro-continent, thanks to its untouched forests, wild shoreline and staggering peaks. Take a boat trip to the Maddalena, a group of islands home to bottlenose dolphins, turtles and more. Budelli Beach is one of the highlights here, where coral-coloured sands contrast with the turquoise waters. Don't forget your swimming gear!
Sicily
Sicily’s eclectic stew of cultures and customs is just one of the many reasons to visit. Here, ancient temples sit alongside Malvasia vineyards, all against the backdrop of the mighty Mount Etna. There are few places better to get your fresh-air fix than at Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve. It can be explored on foot, or if you’re feeling adventurous, horseback. The six knockout beaches and cobalt-blue water will win you over, as will the flurry of local wildlife.
Lake Garda
While Lake Como attracts the movie moguls, Lake Garda’s a hub for adventurers of all kinds. Northern resorts like Riva have got the watersports culture nailed down. We’re talking kayaking, windsurfing, SUP... the lot. Onshore, rent a bike and whizz along the waterfront or relax on one of the pebble beaches. It’s impossible to resist a swim! Save time to hop on the Monte Baldo cable car. From the summit station, a network of well-marked hiking trails criss-crosses the landscape.
The Amalfi Coast
This jewel in Italy’s coastal crown has peaked in popularity in recent years, and for good reason. This is a place where each town, beach, piazza is more beautiful than the next. When you’ve dined on as much seafood as possible and you’re tired of boutique-hopping, the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) is primed for escaping the hustle and bustle. This eight-kilometre path winds through mountain villages and delivers breathtaking views over the entire Sorrento Peninsula.
Tuscany
Crumbling castellos and rolling hills are all part and parcel of Tuscany’s charm. The perfect way to soak up the scenery? On two wheels, of course. That way, you can explore at your own pace and uncover some of the region’s hidden gems. Go further off the beaten path trekking through the rugged Apuan Alps, much of which is a protected nature reserve. And after all that action, your body will relish a dip in the natural springs at the Bagni di San Filippo. Set amid woodlands, its mineral-rich waters are said to have healing qualities.
