Travel out of season

During the school holidays, lift passes tend to be at their most expensive. For the lowest prices, opt to visit at the beginning or towards the end of the season (December or April). Just remember to look for higher-altitude resorts during these months, to make sure you get the best snow cover. If you are travelling as a family, Christmas and Easter tend to be cheaper than February half-term.

Pick a budget-friendly resort

It’s no surprise that the most popular resorts tend to be the most costly. That’s why it pays to go for smaller, lesser well-known spots. How about somewhere like Les Menuires? You’ll be within a snowball’s throw of the vast Three Valleys ski area, without paying for the premium of places like Val Thorens and Courchevel. When it comes to drinking and dining on the mountain, your euros will often go further in Italy. And don’t forget about Andorra! Here, you can snap up accommodation for a fraction of the cost in the Alps.

Look out for deals on lift passes

It’s one of the most important parts of your ski holiday and, unfortunately, the one which will blow the biggest hole in your budget! Some resorts do offer fab deals though, like free lift passes for children under a certain age (usually five years old). You’ll often have the chance to choose between a local and area lift pass too. It’s worth doing your research before you go. Sometimes, it’s more cost-effective to buy a local pass, then you can pay for more day passes if you want to explore the wider resort.

Book early

The early bird catches the best choice of flights, hotels and rooms, so getting your ducks in a row is a must. Plus, the earlier you book, the longer you’ll have to pay off your stay and source everything you need. Buying second hand gear is another way of saving your spends. Lots of sports shops have end-of-season sales – perfect for bagging a bargain!
