Think you know Gran Canaria? Think again! Beyond the sprawling sand dunes and bustling promenades, there are historical treasures, pine-cloaked mountains and so much more to discover. Senior Content Executive, Louisa, spent a summer living and working here, so she’s got the inside scoop on the island’s hidden gems.

1. Where’s the best place to see the sunset?
“Pico de las Nieves, a lookout point in the centre of the island. At nearly 2,000 metres above sea level, you get amazing, uninterrupted views. It’s best reached by car, so pack a picnic and head here in the late afternoon.”
2. Where's the best place to enjoy a drink with a view?
“I really like the rooftop bar at the Bohemia Suites & Spa hotel in Playa del Ingles. The cocktails each have a theme, based on different countries, or you can go for a classic. I recommend booking a table, especially on a weekend. Sea vistas and a Canarian cheese platter? Nothing beats it.”

3. Where's the best place to take a stroll?
“Close to the capital, Las Palmas, Arucas is a lesser-known spot in the north of the island. It’s easy to get lost among the maze of streets and traditional Canarian houses, but be sure to plot the neo-Gothic church on your map. Rum fan? Check out the Arehucas Rum Distillery, where you can enjoy a tasting of the local honey-infused rum.”

4. What's the most Instagrammable experience?
“It’s got to be the Maspalomas Sand Dunes, nearly two miles of windswept sand formations that seem to roll on forever. The sand does get very hot though, so I'd go here in the morning or early evening.”
5. Where's the best place for cocktails?
“My go-to place was a bar called Tipsy Hammock. Come for the beachfront location and stay for the never-ending menu of mojitos. Popcorn, chili, apple pie, dragon berry... you name it, you can try it here. The food is fantastic too!”

6. Where's the best place to go shopping?
“Las Palmas has the best variety when it comes to shopping. Triana Street is where you’ll find all the big-name brands, as well as some independent boutiques.”
7. Where's the best place to dine in Gran Canaria?
“There are so many restaurants to choose from, but my favourite is Pica Pica in Playa del Ingles. It’s a cosy taverna-style restaurant, which serves a mix of Spanish and Greek cuisine. You can always expect a warm welcome here!”

8. Where can you find something quirky?
“In Agaete, you can take a dip in natural swimming pools. They fill up at high tide and provide a peaceful bathing spot where you can watch the waves crash against the rocks. Stay until sunset and you won’t be disappointed!”
9. Where's the best place to grab a souvenir?
“Every Friday, one of the island’s largest markets is held in Puerto Mogán. You can get here by bus, but the best option is to hop on a ferry. That way you get to see some of the coast and pick up your souvenirs, all in one morning! You’ll clock stalls selling everything from clothes and linen to food and pottery.”

10. Where's the best place for traditional Canarian food?
“Personally, I think Las Palmas is the place to be if you’re looking to try some local specialities. Tasca Galileo is a great little spot that’s also really well priced. The braised pork cheeks are yum!”
11. Any cool photo spots?
“Be ready to fill up your camera roll at Barranco de las Vacas. This small canyon is primed for photos and looks like something from another planet. Sun-seeker? Snaps of the white sand and blue waters at Playa de Amadores will make all your friends and family at home think you’re holidaying in the Caribbean not the Canaries.”

12. What are the best sights to tick off?
“It depends what kind of thing you like, but I think the historical district, Vegueta, in Las Palmas is well worth a visit. Mirador del Balcón should also be on your list if panoramas are your priority. The glass and concrete platform overlooks the ocean.”
13. What are the best sports and activities to try?
“Keeping active is easy here and there’s something for everyone. Hiking is really popular, especially in Tamadaba Natural Park. On the coast, water sports are the main activity. I’ve been scuba diving in the south and surfing in the north and both were so much fun.”
14. Where’s the best place to try local wine?
“If you want to try some of the island’s wines, the Gran Canaria Wine Route is just the ticket. It’s made up of over 50 wineries, restaurants and shops. Make a beeline for Bodega Los Berrazales, a family-run coffee plantation and winery in Agaete. You can do a tour of the estate, where you’ll learn all about the production process, followed by a tasting.”
15. Where's the best place for a day trip?
“One of the prettiest places I visited was the town of Tejeda, known for its almond trees. Take the time to explore the traditional whitewashed houses, cobbled streets and lush surroundings. For an extra-special experience, book a table at the Parador de Cruz de Tejeda for lunch.”
