Slink off on a Skiathos holiday and you’ll find jaw-dropping natural scenery, vast beaches to chill out on and a go-slow vibe that you’ll never tire of. And better yet, that’s all before you even visit the sister islands!
Sensational Skopelos is an option, but we want to show you around astonishing Alonissos. As we’re the number one for Greece, we know a thing or two about Alonissos Island holidays. That’s why we’re here to give you a snapshot of what to expect when you journey to a trio of Alonissos resorts that are among our faves. Ready to explore? Right this way…

Swoop into Skiathos…
If you’re already in-the-know about Skiathos, is it safe to assume it’s because of the Mamma Mia! films? A lot of the scenes were shot here, so there’s no shame in it – we’re fans too. But this place isn’t all just song and dance – from the moment you swill your feet in the cool sea to the second you clap eyes on classic Greek meze platters, you’ll be in your element.
Skiathos gives you that real, authentic side of Greece. It’s big on water sports and island-hopping, with a pumping nightlife scene in July and August that you wouldn’t expect from such a laid-back locale. But the neon lights shine bright! There are around 60 bronzed beaches, more than 500km of hiking trails and, if you’re an eagle-eyed plane-spotter, keep your head in the clouds! You never know what you’ll spot.

…And then on to Alonissos Island
Rugged, biscuit-hued cliffs, soft sands and traditional towns painted in glossy blues and whites – that’s Alonissos Island for you! No wonder we want to shout about it. While you’ll fly into Skiathos and use it as a springboard, you can choose a hotel haven to suit you in one of plucky Alonissos’ resorts.
Spend your days doing a bit of everything. Dig into the culture, sample locally produced vino and sprawl out on the shorefront as aromas from orchards and pine forests stir your senses. Another Alonissos tip is its underwater museum – how’s that for quirky?

Magical Marpunta
Over on the south coast, Marpunta is a snoozy resort snuggled up against the sand and sea, so you’ll really get that desert-island feeling here. Its main draw is its sleepiness – with beaches, easygoing eateries and nearby towns to its name, Marpunta is made for the more carefree traveller. Just after a scenic holiday away from the hustle and bustle? Yep, this one’s aimed at you.
Take a wander to snap those all-important holiday photos at sunset and watch bewitching blues fade into smudgy apricots and mauves across the sky. Pitch up in a rustic restaurant and order everything from juicy olives to enjoy with a beer or jam-packed gyros slathered with tzatziki.

Pretty Patitiri
Welcome to Alonissos Island’s capital, where an idyllic harbour is on hand to greet you. In the northern Sporades, Patitiri is another resort that likes the snail’s pace but also knows how to turn things up a notch. Its pebbly shore is where to be during the day, but when the rays have gone in, you should go out. A harbourside taverna is the prime spot for sipping local wine by the glass.
Patitiri has also stayed true to its roots by preserving its heritage in the older part of town. Round here, the streets get narrow but they pave the way to churches – the local stamp of a time gone by.

Stunning Steni Vala
And if you simply can’t choose, then here’s another option to either seal the deal or make you mull over our awesome Aegean jollies some more. Tranquillity is the name of the game in Steni Vala, where you’ll still find blissful scenery that lays claim to dinky cafés and Greek eateries, little shops and places to hang out by the waterside.
Speaking of the waterside – Steni Vala is apparently home to baby monk seals. Some have been orphaned, so a local rescue centre takes them under their wing, while others are just curious and might be around the shore.
If you simply can’t sit on the sofa another moment without getting a Greek getaway booked, you know where to find our Alonissos Island holidays!
