On dry land

Let’s begin on the island. Tenerife is famed for its wild, rugged and volcanic landscape, so you can just imagine the variety of terrains and environments this offers up. At the heart of it all, you’ll find Teide National Park which is home to Mount Teide – a volcano and Spain’s highest summit!

Walking and hiking

Ambling through Teide National Park is an experience like no other. The Mars-like landscape creates a unique backdrop and age-old lava flows have formed unusual rock formations surrounding Mount Teide.

If you’re looking to take in the whole of the mountain, it’s best to devote at least four or five hours to it.

If you want to push yourself that little bit further, why not up the tempo with a jog or run along these routes instead? The climate can be very unpredictable if you’re heading up high and the terrain a little rocky underfoot, so be sure to pack a bottle of water, layered clothing and your comfiest pair of running trainers.

The best bit? If your legs are tired once you reach the summit, simply hop on the Teide Cable Car, and take in the stunning views as it brings you back down in eight minutes flat. Don’t forget your camera for those stunning panoramic views!

Cycling

Prefer to get about on two wheels rather than two feet? Tenerife is geared up for that too! And as you’ll be moving faster on a bike, you’ll get to see even more of the island during your stay. Picture brilliant beaches, traditional towns and stunning scenery all passing you by as you navigate your way across the island.

Simply hire bikes in your resort and you’ll have the whole of Tenerife at your fingertips. Playa De Las Americas, on the south-east coast, boasts plenty of flat roads which lead all the way down to the volcanic black sand shore, so they’re perfect for biking beginners.

From rolling in-land hills to the captivating coastal paths, you’ve got a whole host of more challenging routes to choose from. Two of the most popular include the climb to Masca, a teeny mountainous village, and of course, the epic Mount Teide climb. No cycling fans should miss it. After all, it’s the longest continuous climb across Europe!

Golf

Is there anything better than practising that swing on a sun-drenched fairway? Here in Tenerife, you’ve got more than a handful of top golf courses to pick from, a few of which are up there with some of the best in Spain!

Golf del Sur golf course is the host course of various tournaments. So if you’re wanting to play like a pro, this could be the one for you.

Just a short drive over to the west coast will bring you to Golf Las Americas. Located in one of Tenerife’s most lively resorts, it boasts pristine greens studded with trees and excellent facilities. Grab a beer in the clubhouse after your round or venture out into Playa De Las Americas for the hustle and bustle.

Playa Diego Hernández

Out on the water

It’s beach bliss out here in Tenerife, with a variety of black and golden sand beaches dotted along the coastline for you to choose from. Ten of the island’s beaches have Blue Flag status actually, so you know you’re in for a real treat. If sunbathing’s not really your bag, then why not make the most of the amazing offshore activities that are on offer?

Diving and snorkelling

From PADI-certified dive schools to more casual scuba diving sessions, there are plenty of places where you can head below shore and discover the colourful underwater world.

In Playa Paraiso on the west coast, you’ll find a range of excellent diving schools which cater for everyone, from beginners to the very experienced diver. Alongside a professional, you can take to the water and spot all kinds of fish, manta rays and starfish. Some even offer scuba scooters, which are a totally unique way of exploring the ocean!

SUP, kayaking and surfing

Stand-up paddleboarding is becoming more and more popular across the globe, so if you’re wanting to give it a go for the first time, or maybe perfect your craft, you couldn’t get a better setting than Tenerife.

Costa Adeje’s Playa Del Duque and Playa Fanabe both boast ideal conditions for this activity thanks to their calm winds and water. It’s super simple to learn how to navigate your way through the waves on a board and the whole family can get involved!

Once you get the hang of SUP, why not ditch the paddle and try straight-up surfing? Playa del Arenal, right up on the north coast, is your best bet for a variety of small to medium waves while wild and rugged Playa De Benijo is for the real thrill-seekers. Expect huge waves crashing against the black sand shore.

The best bit? Keep your eyes peeled and you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of turtles, whales and dolphins while you explore the amazing Atlantic Ocean!
