The markets

The biggest Christmas market in the city is Targ Węglowy market, located in the Old Town. It dates back to the 17th century, so it’s steeped in history. Fuel yourself with plenty of pierogis (dumplings) then make your way around the maze of stalls. These spots champion local artisans who sell fab stocking-fillers like handmade hats and glass ornaments. If you’re visiting with little ones, shepherd them over to the south end of the market. From 1-23 December, they can watch the daily opening of the advent gate, which will reveal a special surprise. They’ll be dazzled by the spinning carousel and sleigh-ride simulator too! Usually, the market runs from the end of November until the last week of December.

This isn’t the only place where you can get in the Yuletide spirit though. The twinkling lights bring a pinch of winter magic to the surrounding streets of Przedbramie, Bogusławskiego and Tkacka. The Great Armoury often hosts workshops, where you can get stuck into activities like making decoration making and bauble painting. For something a little different, head to the European Solidarity Centre. Here, you can pick up unique gifts and gourmet treats. And there are usually special events on around this time of year!

The food

The food is undoubtedly one of the best parts of a Christmas market, and it’s no exception here. Follow the aroma of roasted chestnuts and grab a bag to munch on. After something more filling? Go for a padja, a grilled sandwich topped with your choice of kielbasa sausage or minced meat. There’s loads on offer for those with a sweet tooth as well, including makowiec (poppy seed cake) and piernik (gingerbread). It’s not just Polish food either – Spanish churros, Greek bougasta (custard pie)... you can try it all at the food court. And if you’ve had enough mulled wine to last a lifetime, why not give a mug of steaming mulled beer a go?

Don’t miss

There’s one thing that’s bound to put a smile on the face of even the most staunch bah-humbugers and that’s Łoś Lucek (Lucky the talking moose). Yep, this character is a highlight of the market and loves to tell a joke or a two to passersby.
