Fashion-focused European cities for shopping

Self-confessed fashionista? Plan your trips around retail therapy? You’re speaking our language…

IGLAL

So many of the European cities on our map double-up as fashion capitals, where you’ll find yourself perusing the most enviable rails and racks, and walking among streetwear icons. Style has become a cultural pillar in various hotspots around there, but which are the coolest ones to check out? It’s time you explored the best fashion-focused European cities for shopping.

Paris

Probably the undisputed fashion capital, Paris is the global hub for luxury brands and haute couture. Its rich history in this sphere ranges from the early 20th century to modern-day designers, and it hosts the much-chatted-about annual Fashion Week. For the best shopping in Paris, hit houses like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Givenchy.

As for where to begin, make a beeline for the upmarket shopping district of Avenue Montaigne. And trendy neighbourhoods like Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Marais are unrivalled for unique boutiques and local designers. While you’re at it, between browsing and buying – and of course partaking in an on-the-go croissant or macaron – stop at Musée Yves Saint Laurent and Palais Galliera.

Barcelona

Bohemian Barcelona offers a stylish yet laidback vibe, where creativity meets sophisticated design. And we dig it because it’s known for its unique blend of Spanish heritage, street style and avant-garde fashion.

The city’s artistic credentials are long, but they’re most famously influenced by Gaudí’s feats of architectural flair, as well as modernist designs. Your best bets for a good old-fashioned shop are the fashion-forward El Born and Eixample districts, while La Rambla ticks the local-boutiques box. The Museu del Disseny is well worth a visit to shake up the itinerary, why not sync your calendar with when Barcelona Fashion Week’s on? It’s ideal for emerging designers.

Copenhagen

Scandi style has recently emerged as one of the most exciting fashion trends, which has meant Copenhagen has come up trumps. And now, it’s revered for its minimalist design and nods to sustainability. So if you’re into a commitment to eco-friendly fashion, along with clean lines and timeless design, this innovative city has your name on.

Copenhagen’s fashion is becoming more and more synonymous with ethical choices, but its street style remains effortlessly chic and modern. When you’re hunting for new threads, head to shopping areas including Strøget and Vesterbro. There’s also the Danish Design Museum to add to the itinerary. The classy bars here just so happen to be great for outfit-inspo-spotting too – bonus.

Berlin

Edgy athleisure, tech-forward fashion and an influence on urban everyday wear, Berlin isn’t just the German capital that excels at food and history. Yep, it’s got the look too. And it’s seriously expressive in its clothing as well.

But what sets it apart? Well, it’s a creative hub for designers aiming to make a statement, and its districts such as Mitte and Kreuzberg are as hip as they come. Hackescher Markt is a great pick if you’re interested in mooching around various boutique stores as well. Plus, the Museum of Fashion offers an alternative to working your way up the Reichstag.

Vienna

Royal history is usually what first springs to mind on the subject of Vienna. It’s got classical roots and, now, a growing name as a contemporary European fashion city, where a mix of tradition and cutting-edge design awaits. The daily ensembles are usually polished, whether you spy well-dressed tourists around Klimt-adorned Belvedere Palace or out for a night at the opera.

The city’s designers have managed to combine old-world charm with modern aesthetics. So, naturally, the upscale shopping districts like Graben Street and Kohlmarkt are home to top international brands and local boutiques. You’ll learn that tailoring is big around here too. Those interested in seeing exhibitions on top of enjoying some retail therapy should swing by the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK).

Venice

Venice, famous for its canals and Renaissance architecture, is a melting pot for the olde worlde. With plush textiles right in the centre of it all, expect classic elegance with a twist. You’ll see a lot of understated luxury here, yet independent creators have also made their mark in Venice.

As shopping goes, Rialto Market should be your number one for artisan goods and accessories. There are some high-ticket stores along Piazza San Marco and Calle Larga XXII Marzo as well. But forgetting garments for a moment, remember that the so-called ‘Floating City’ is massive for its lace, silk and Murano glass!

Prague

Vintage influences with contemporary designs? Characterful fusions of old-school and super-modern? Prague’s fashion scene couldn’t be more varied. The city has a distinctive, eclectic style, drawing on Eastern European influences while embracing global fashion trends. The local designers have struck a balance between retro-inspired pieces and youthful ‘fits.

Fashionistas should embrace the Old Town and Vinohrady, two zones filled with vintage boltholes, indie boutiques and art galleries to boot. You’ll also come across plenty of Czech clothes shops while you’re at it. Let the shopping trail continue down Palladium Shopping Center and Parizska Street, if you just can’t get enough.
