Whether you’re a clan of seasoned skiers or wanting to introduce your tots to the slopes for the first time, Salzburg Airport is a great gateway to the Austrian Alps. And with our family-friendly Jet2 flights, 10kg hand luggage included and the option to add up to 22kg baggage and ski carriage*, all you need to do is decide on the right resort. Inspiration incoming...
Filzmoos
Distance from Salzburg Airport: 72km
This cosy alpine village packs a winning punch, with its relaxed vibe and fantastic ski schools. Watch their faces light up as they whizz down, over and under obstacles on the FilZOO adventure trail. The fun continues at the toboggan run, so prepare for good times galore. When it’s time to slip off the ski boots, pull up a pew in one of the traditional restaurants and feast on Austrian fare. We’ve got a feeling the youngsters will love Kaiserschmarren, shredded pancakes served with fruit compote.
Ellmau
Distance from Salzburg Airport: 73km
Families are fans of Ellmau’s nursery areas, quiet slopes and laidback atmosphere. Start the week practising your turns down the tree-lined blues on the Astberg Mountain, then let the kids loose in the Kaiserpark snow park. Beyond the terrific terrain, it’s the town’s non-ski offerings that have us singing its praises. Be sure to save some time to check out the Kaiserbad leisure centre, complete with a pool, slides, tennis courts and a climbing wall!
Schladming
Distance from Salzburg Airport: 88km
From the spooky slopes of the Witch Wood Planneralm to Hopsi Children’s Winter Wonderland, this resort rolls out the red carpet for kids. With 230km of piste to play with, and two nursery areas for beginners, there’s no time for thumb-twiddling here. There are often ski pass offers for families, so be sure to check their website before you book. For a unique experience, don’t miss the Sky Walk or the Dachstein Ice Palace.
Obertauern
Distance from Salzburg Airport: 90km
When it comes to winter holidays with the little ones, ski-in, ski-out accommodation is a big plus. Obertauern delivers on this front, and many others, including its snow-sure slopes and range of activities. It’ll be smiles all round as you embark on the Bobby-Runde circuit together. An enchanted forest and a ghost train, plus Bobby the friendly mascot, all add to the adventure. When it comes to mealtimes, even the fussiest eaters will find something to suit across the town’s restaurants.
Bad Gastein
Distance from Salzburg Airport: 96km
Fun comes first in Bad Gastein, with nearly 200km of piste to uncover. The Angertal area, which can be reached on the free bus, is the best place for beginners. More experienced? You’ll want to set your sights (and skis) on the 10.5km-long red run from the Hohe Scharte summit. There’s plenty to keep all ages entertained off the mountain too. Who’s for a dip in one of the thermal spas? You could even head across to the rink and try out ice stock, which is similar to curling.
