The short transfer from the airport is just the start of La Clusaz’s draws. Nestled in the heart of the French Alps, this snowglobe resort welcomes youngsters with open arms. It’s part of the Aravis ski area, so you’ll have 210km of winter playground at your ski tips, including 31 blue runs. And when a jam-packed morning at ski school calls for refuelling on rounds of raclette, there are plenty of alpine restaurants to choose from. Beyond the mountain, bowling and ice skating are just a few of the activities you can get stuck into.

This quiet resort gets a gold star for its kid-tastic offerings. Little ones can practise their first turns for free in the Mappys nursery area. Then, once they’re feeling more confident, they’ll have a whale of a time at the Grand Cry Territory. Fun trails, skill-based games, tepees, a picnic area and so much more await. You can even tick off two countries in one day together, thanks to speedy links to the Swiss slopes. Morzine

Distance from airport: 80km

With a prime postcode in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, Morzine tops many tribes must-visit list. There’s 650km of piste spanning both France and Switzerland and you’ll have easy access to the neighbouring resort of Avoriaz. Head to the top of the Pléney gondola on your first day and you’ll spot lots of people snow ploughing their way down the mountain. The gentle run back to the village is a winner after a busy day on the slopes too. As for the accommodation, most is just a just short walk to the slopes. How handy is that?

Flaine

Part of the Grand Massif ski area (one of the largest in France), Flaine’s an expert in fun. The best bit? You can bag a free lift pass for children under eight! There are lots of gentle slopes for beginners, as well as more challenging terrain for the pros. The town itself is split into two levels – Flaine Forum and Flaine Forêt – that are connected by funiculars. You can dial up your downtime on the ice karting track or enjoy some friendly competition at the bowling alley.

Megève, France

Distance from airport: 86km

Just over an hour’s drive from Geneva, Megève’s as convenient as it is charming. The centre’s car-free cobbled streets and pistes for all levels makes it a fab pick for first-timers. Enrol the kids in one of the fantastic ski schools, then reconvene for a debrief over a cup of steaming hot chocolate. The town has all the amenities you could you need, plus it’s home to the largest indoor-outdoor sports complex in the Alps – Palais Megève.
