Coming from the local meaning for ‘garden’, a riad is a classic style of Moroccan architecture – a tall building in the medina which features a courtyard in the middle. Nowadays, they’re usually hotels or guesthouses, often adorned with intricate tilework and typically housing a water fountain and plants right at the core. Fruit trees, calligraphy and lanterns might also be front and centre. They really don’t get much more stunning and, conveniently, they’re one of the most affordable types of accommodation in the bustling city of Marrakech.
Our Jet2CityBreaks portfolio is testament to that – scroll through where’s available to book, when you want to go, and you’ll see lots of three-star riads pop up. Here’s what you can look forward to when you stay in one...
Serene spas
Marrakech’s market stalls might ignite the senses with their kaleidoscopic allure, but prepare for your mind, body and soul to feel nourished there too. Lots of the riads offer spas and wellness centres on-site, as well as hammams (Turkish baths). Save an afternoon for a pampering and you won’t regret sinking into calming water or a muscle-soothing massage. Do your homework on what therapies are offered per property before you go or ask to see a menu when you arrive if you settle on a riad with a spa. Aaand relax.
A spot of tea
Whether it’s poured with your breakfast (many remarkable riads do B&B as a minimum board option) or you order one in the afternoon, trying Moroccan mint tea is a must. It’s famous for a reason and served in tall glasses, rather than in dainty cups or mugs. You might also want to buy some to take home – visit one of the buzzy stalls at Jemaa el-Fna (the vibrant main square) and be ready to barter for the best price.
Dips in the pool
Sun terraces that surround the centrepiece pools are the common denominators of most riads in our Jet2CityBreaks collection. Some are located on the rooftops though. And with 22kg baggage and 10kg hand luggage included, you’re free to pack enough swimwear for every day of your trip! After all, what could be more de-stressing after sightseeing around local landmarks than a swim in your hotel’s pool? The bright blue water complements the gorgeous greens, reds and whites generally found in the quintessentially bright, colourful mosaics too.
Drinks on the rooftop
So you like a flavour of the nightlife while you’re on a city break? We hear you. Sampling signature cocktails can be the way to do it – especially up in chic rooftop bars, like the ones in a lot of the riads. But here in Marrakech, you may find that alcohol isn’t available due to local drinking customs. It’ll be a mix of dry and non-dry venues in the city, so pick a watering hole to suit you. But a soft or hot drink are just as enjoyable when you’re soaking up the city from a height. The views are unparalleled too – drink them in! You’ll also notice these rooftop spots lay on snacks and main-course dishes to order.
Petite rooms
Charm aplenty is neatly packaged up into a modestly sized space in these riads. The rooms might not be the most spacious, but they’re cosy and characterful – what more could you want? The pops of colour that Marrakech is known for will be on show in your room, and some even have handy extras like a kettle, fridge, bathrobe and slippers. Have a look on the hotel details on our website when you’re booking, for all the details.
