We know there’s a lot to think about before you jet off on your well-deserved holiday, like making sure you’ve packed your favourite outfits, to remembering that all-important passport. And what’s just as important is making sure you’ve secured the right travel insurance for your trip, so you can enjoy your holiday knowing you’re protected against the unexpected, every step of the way.
If you don’t travel with the right level of cover and something goes wrong while you’re on holiday, it can result in an expensive bill – and nobody wants that!
Here are a few examples of situations where your travel insurance can cover you:
- Medical emergencies and repatriation
- Lost or stolen baggage
- Trip cancellations or interruptions
- Natural disasters

Types of travel insurance
There are many different types of travel insurance, and it’s important you choose the right option for you.
Single trip: One-off cover for a single trip.
Multi trip: If you’re planning more than one trip this year, a multi-trip policy could offer better value for money.
Family: Cover the whole family. For even better value, we offer free cover for kids with an adult policy too.
Sports and activities: If you’re planning specific activities while you’re away, like skiing or snowboarding, you might need specific insurance cover.
Group or couples: Group policies can be a great way to organise policies for multiple people, keeping everyone’s cover in one place.

FCDO Travel Aware’s handy tips and tricks when buying travel insurance
1. Make sure you declare any medical conditions
It’s really important to be honest about all pre-existing conditions to avoid any possible claims being rejected and you losing out.
2. Check the insurance covers your holiday activities
Make sure you’re covered for any potential activities that you plan to do while you’re away.
3. Check insurance covers your whole trip
Some insurance policies have a limit on the amount of time you can be abroad, so always double check the full duration of your trip is covered.
4. Make sure you are covered for medical evacuation
If you need to come home or be transported to hospital due to medical reasons, it can often be very expensive.
5. Pack your policy
Take a paper copy of your policy documents in case you lose your phone or don’t have signal. This document also sets out all the details you’ll need on your policy.
6. Share your insurance details before going abroad
Share details with your travel companions and friends or family at home in case they need to contact your travel insurance company on your behalf.
