Not sure where to begin? We’ve picked out a cluster of Europe’s most impressive churches and cathedrals, just begging to be gazed upon on your 2025 holiday...
Notre-Dame, Paris
The Notre-Dame is an incredible Gothic building right on the Île de la Cité, in the heart of Paris. It was built between the 12th and 14th centuries and is famous for its staggering architecture, stained glass and flying buttresses. After a large fire that blazed in 2019, it’s in the process of undergoing major works – but it’s still well worth seeing from the outside.
Sagrada Família, Barcelona
Hello, one of the world’s most iconic structures! The Sagrada Família is a truly unique basilica that was designed by architect Antoni Gaudí. It's been under construction in Barcelona since 1882 and is famous for its wild, nature-inspired architecture. Its quirky intricacies are epic – especially when the sun juts through them and casts a kaleidoscope of light all around!
Cologne Cathedral, Cologne
Here you have, quite simply, a Gothic masterpiece. That’s right, Cologne Cathedral is all about the towering spires that dominate the city’s skyline. It was constructed over a whopping period of time – from 1248 until the 19th century – so it’s been carefully curated. Another fine example of a cathedral with breathtaking stained-glass windows.

St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna
Vienna’s architecture will leave your jaw on the floor at any opportunity, but it’s especially excellent at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. With its iconic patterned roof and striking spire, it’s hard to miss! Built in the 12th century, it’s a real symbol of the city and is famous for its impactful interior and vast views from the top.
St. Mark's Basilica, Venice
Mixing Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic architecture is this postcard-worthy triumph in Venice. Located in the famous Piazza San Marco, you can expect to behold its golden mosaics, detailed designs and wowing domes. This cathedral is one of the most revered attractions in the city, making it a bucket-list must-see!
St. Peter's Basilica, Rome
St. Peter’s Basilica is in Rome’s Vatican City, so it’s naturally got globally renowned credentials. It sits on the world stage as a pillar of outstanding, traditional architecture, with rich history at its core. It was designed by Michelangelo and various others, and many works of art, including the Pietà, call it home. You’ll find the grand dome and lavish interiors particularly astonishing.
St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague
More jagged and Gothic still is Prague’s St. Vitus Cathedral. Dark and moody, the spires and huge windows are photo-worthy enough from the exterior. But go inside and you’ll get glimpses of more stained-glass windows, pews and columns – all in that classic, olde worlde style. Though it was built back in the 14th century, the cathedral still reels in the visitors in their masses.
Our Lady of the Rocks, Montenegro
This one’s a little different, but in up-and-coming Montenegro, you’ll want to clap eyes on Our Lady of the Rocks! It’s essentially a church on a man-made island in Kotor Bay, constructed by local fishermen and features fascinating frescoes and a charming altar. The island’s serene setting, surrounded by mountains and water, adds to the appeal, so hop on a boat from Perast and enjoy.
So, which will you pay a visit to first?
