Geneva

For avid skiers, there really is snow place like Geneva. Where the Alps’ piercing peaks stud the skyline and chocolate-box timber towns beckon with their après-ski offerings, one of Europe’s most popular winter sports regions comes into its own.

While Chamonix is a shining example of why this gateway to Switzerland and France is so fabled among slope-carving jet-setters, a closer-to-the-airport option, Villars, tends to be cheaper too. Tignes takes the top spot for families and mixed abilities.

Salzburg

The hills are alive with the sound of skiers and snowboarders come winter in Salzburg. It isn’t a bank-breaking part of Austria, with drinks and three-course meal prices not dissimilar to at home. But as they say, time is money, so when there are resorts such as Wagrain, Saalbach-Hinterglemm and Söll within easier reach of the airport, you can make effective use of your spell on the snow too.

Keeping your peepers on the pound coins is simpler in Obertauern and Kitzbühel, where ski pass prices are among the most favourable. And if you’re a snowboarder, you won’t tire of the facilities for riders at Mayrhofen’s PenkenPark.

Chambery

Well-connected Chambery promises shorter transfer times, airport shuttles and a less bustling vibe generally. Around the Savoie region, the choice of 250-plus resorts is overwhelming, so your best bet is to consider what you’re after. Quickest to get from A to B? Méribel, Les Menuires and Les Sept Laux have bragging rights when it comes to proximity to where you’ll land.

Cheap means cheerful, right? If that’s your where-to-base-yourself yardstick, you’ll be pleased to learn that imported beers are often not too expensive. Feeling soft? Fizzy drinks won’t set you back either.

Innsbruck

Unlock a wealth of jaw-on-the-floor architecture in central Innsbruck, while around 3,000km of powder-plastered pistes wrap around the Austrian region. Igls and Seefeld come up trumps for kind-on-the-coppers resorts, but in order to really make some savings – and enjoy straightforward skiing – you ought to buy a handy SKI plus CITY Pass Stubai Innsbruck.

Wining and dining, be it at lunch or later in the evening, is done pretty inexpensively here, so you can decompress off the snow in laidback, purse-friendly settings.

Grenoble

Black runs, terrain parks, mighty mountains, flowing rivers… Grenoble is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s another great choice if you’re hoping not to be on the bus to your resort for too long, and it also isn’t one you have to elbow your way around either.

The Three Valleys is renowned for encompassing all the must-ski areas, and of the bunch, Chamrousse, Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes are often chosen based on their location. But don’t miss Morzine – it’s a solid pick for more seasoned snow-farers.
