New restrictions on personal meat and dairy imports to the UK from all EU countries have changed!
Effective from 12 April 2025, the UK Government has extended the ban on personal imports of meat and dairy products from all EU countries to protect against foot and mouth disease (FMD). Find out more here.
What’s banned
Travellers entering Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) must not bring:
- Sandwiches containing meat or dairy
- Cheese, yoghurt, butter, milk
- Raw or cured meats (e.g. ham, salami, sausages)
- Meat-based snacks, even if sealed or duty-free
What’s still allowed
Some exemptions apply:
- Infant milk and medical foods (in limited quantities)
- Composite products like chocolate, bread, cakes, biscuits and pasta (without meat/dairy fillings)
Enforcement and penalties
Border Force officers will seize and destroy prohibited items, and offenders may face fines up to £5,000 in England. This applies only to personal imports, not commercial trade. It does not apply to travellers from Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.
