Majorca

In Majorca, the riding revolution is in full swing. It’s long been the choice for the cycling greats like Bradley Wiggins, thanks to its varied terrain of coastal flats, winding roads and mist-cloaked mountains. When it comes to routes, Sa Calobra is the star of the show. It’s a 92km round trip from Pollensa, so it’s best for those who like their holidays with a side of hills. You'll be well rewarded though, with swoon-worthy views as you ascend the Tramuntana Mountains. The Coll de Sóller is another popular route, where you can take on the twists and turns of the northern section or stick to the southern side if you’d prefer an easier ride.

Tenerife

Tenerife may be the preferred training destination for many beginners to get stuck into! The island’s dramatic natural beauty and year-round sunshine makes it an ideal spot to explore on two wheels, but where to start? Seasoned cyclists will want to tackle Mount Teide, where you can ride from 0 to 2,000m in just 35km. The Anaga National Park is another great option as you can cycle the climb and try your cornering skills on the descent. In the south, it’s a more laid-back affair, with coastal roads boasting stunning sea views. If you’re travelling with tots in tow, this place is primed for families with pint-sized pedallers.

Italy

Think Italy’s just about culture-rich cities, wood-fired pizzas and art-stuffed museums? Think again! It’s got plenty to enjoy from the saddle too. Take Tuscany for example, where sun-soaked countryside gifts cyclists with cypress-lined vineyards and valleys. On Lake Garda, it’s all about the views, especially in the south where the paths are pancake-flat so you can soak up the scenery as you go. The terrain differs in the north as you climb towards the mountains, but a lakeside dip is the perfect antidote for those tired thighs. Road cycling is Lido di Jesolo’s forte, so pedal from beach to bar with a healthy helping of gelato breaks.

Croatia

Croatia and cycling go hand in hand. Mountains, coast, countryside, town centres – you can whizz through them all in this charming country. The Dalmatian coast is an outdoor playground that’s stuffed with scenic trails. Why not hop on a ferry and explore one of the nearby islands? Head to Hvar and pedal through green corridors of olive groves, tucked-away villages and secluded coves. Mljet’s another emerald gem and a third of the island is a designated national park that’s criss-crossed with traffic-free cycling trails. To the east of Dubrovnik, you’ll find Konavle Valley, a slice of Croatian countryside that’s a total paradise. Pedal along the banks of the Ljuta River to uncover vineyards and local landmarks.
