The resort

Courmayeur attracts a glitzy crowd, thanks to its upmarket atmosphere and array of fine-dining restaurants. The cobbled centre is car-free, so you can spend your evenings hopping from boutique to bar (with a spritz stop or two, of course). Accommodation prices are often lower here than in some of the bigger resorts, with family-run hotels and quaint chalets among the offerings. It’s also a fab option if you’re travelling with non-skiers, as there are loads of off-slope activities to get stuck into and great transport links to other nearby resorts.

The slopes

With 42km to play with, quality over quantity is the theme here. Over half of the runs are red, so it’s a great spot for more seasoned skiers and boarders. Make the most of the morning sunshine and head across to the Checrouit side of the mountain on the Courmayeur or Dolonne chairlift. Cruise down the wide, open slopes then follow the sun over to the tree-lined trails around the Val Veny area. Snowboarders and off-piste pros will want to take on the Vallée Blanche – a 20km route down into Chamonix. Ticked off everything in Courmayeur? Hop on the free bus to nearby La Thuile, where you’ll unlock 152km of prime winter real estate and the French resort of La Rosière.

The après

When the lifts close for the day, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. We’re talking a swimming pool, climbing wall and ice-skating. And you can’t leave without heading up the Skyway Monte Bianco. This cable car whizzes all the way up to 3,466 metres and offers unrivalled 360-degrees mountain views. In need of pampering? Take the local bus to QC Terme Pré Saint Didier. Relaxation rooms and panoramic pools are just the start at this state-of-the-art spa. For evening entertainment, the après leans more towards laidback than lively. Swanky cocktail bars and cosy cafes are top of the agenda. Though, you can still find a party atmosphere if you look for it. Super G is a prime pick, with live DJs and regular events.
