The resort

The resort itself has an authentic Italian feel and there’s plenty for skiers and non-skiers alike. It’s particularly popular among locals from Milan and Rome, who come up for the weekend and spend their time flitting from the pistes to the many bars and restaurants. In the mood for some retail therapy? There are over 250 shops, selling everything from jewellery to snow gear. There’s also a weekly market on Tuesdays and Fridays, where you can pick up regional specialties like grappa. It couldn’t be easier to get around the resort, thanks to the free buses which you can catch from Piazza Roma and the main bus station. And when it comes to accommodation, you’ll find luxury, five-star hotels alongside family-run apartments.

The slopes

You’ll have 120km of piste to play with and lots of varied terrain to keep you busy. It’s fab for beginners, with a great nursery area near the Socrepes lift station and tons of wide, gentle runs. More seasoned skiers can unlock a network of blues and reds further up the mountain, like the 9km-long Armentarola run. And you won’t want to leave without tackling the daring Downhill course! After freestyle fun? Hop on the Faloria cable car and point your skis or board in the direction of the snow park. You can test your tricks on the jumps, rails and boxes. This area’s also rich in history, so why not embark on the Grande Guerra ski circuit, which takes in sites from WWI?

The après

After a day clocking up the kilometres, there are loads of ways to unwind off the mountain. Grab your skates and whizz around the ice rink or have a go at curling. Snow biking, snow kiting, dog sledding... yep, you can try it all. As for sipping spots, après is a more laidback affair here. We’re talking cocktails in chic bars and cosy dinners in swanky restaurants. Ristorante Tivoli Cortina is one of the top fine-dining spots, with fish sourced daily from the markets in Venice and a panoramic terrace boasting picture-perfect views. Everyone knows pizza is vital skiing fuel, so be sure to try Il Ponte’s.
