Barcelona

From historical hotspots to incredible art, boutique shops to trendy nightlife, Barcelona is a buzzing hub of life. Spend your days wandering through the sun-tinged streets, marvel at the spectacular Sagrada Família, stopping off for a coffee or a refreshing drink down Las Ramblas. Once you’ve taken in all the sights of this vibrant city, why not hit the beach?

If the sun’s shining, grab your towel and your flip flops and head to one of the seven golden beaches within reach of Barcelona’s centre. Whether you’re looking to chill on the shore or plan to get stuck into some water sports, you’re covered here.

Palma

Majorca’s capital is brimming with history and packed full of amazing architecture. Visit the soaring Palma Cathedral or wander through pine-lined paths to discover the rare circular 14th-century Bellver Castle. After all that sightseeing, tuck into delicious local food – you can take your pick from tasty Spanish tapas, bold Mediterranean dishes and rustic island delicacies.

When you’ve spent a few days soaking up the city, a little R&R will be in order. Head to one of the gorgeous Blue Flag beaches that frame the area, pull up a sunbed, grab your book and relax. Whether you’re going for a dip or enjoying the rays, you can do all that with just a short walk from the city centre.

Nice

The crowning jewel of the French Riviera, Nice is the perfect spot for a city break by the sea. From the très chic boutiques to the meandering warren of side streets in the Old Town, you can easily lose yourself in this charming destination. Explore the historic centre, lined with colourful houses and stunning churches, dine in dinky bistros serving up seafood and cheese boards, and experience the impressive architecture of Notre-Dame de Nice.

Separated from the city by the palm tree-lined Promenade des Anglais, Nice’s pebbly beach is the ideal place to catch some rays. Here you can kick-back and relax in serene surroundings. In need of a little refreshment? The shops and restaurants along the promenade are close by.

Malaga

Spain’s historic port city is fantastic place to soak up some culture in the famous sun of the Costa Del Sol. Here, the modern side of Malaga rubs shoulders with the old, making for the perfect cultural break. Discover the 1st-century Roman Theatre right in the centre of the city or head to the awe-inspiring Malaga Cathedral to snap some pictures of the skyline-dominating exterior. All this can be found close to the cosmopolitan shops and modern buildings.

And, alongside all this, you’ve got all the benefits that come from being perched on the gorgeous Costa Del Sol. Sandy shores and sunshine await, just a short walk from the bustling city centre. Take a break from all that exploring and spend a day chilling out to the sound of lapping waves.

Dubrovnik

Turn your attention to Croatia. The Old Town in Dubrovnik offers up a gold-tinged treasure trove of UNESCO-stamped wonders, making it a must for your next city break. Explore the shimmering streets of the city and discover beautiful architecture, historic buildings and scenes worthy of the silver screen. No, really – Dubrovnik has been used for the backdrop for TV shows and films many times, Game of Thrones included.

With all that to its name, the city’s proximity to the beach is a bonus. From here, the shorefront is just a short journey away. What’s more, all you adventurous types can head out on day trips from the city to small islands where the beaches are empty and the sun is shining. Lokrum is one of our faves!
