A few years ago, I spent a winter season in Cervinia. Sitting in the shadow of the iconic Matterhorn and boasting snow-sure slopes, it’s a skier's dream. It’s easy to reach too, thanks to direct flights to Turin Airport with Jet2.com. Just an hour and a half’s transfer later and voilà – you’re in winter wonderland.

The resort

Although the resort itself is largely purpose-built, the setting is arguably one of the most magical in the Alps. The town centre’s main street is cobbled and car-free, lined with cafés, bars and restaurants. Fancy a spot of shopping? There’s a handful of boutiques to choose from. There are lots of options when it comes to accommodation too, from large hotels to small, family-run chalets. Plus, you’ll find prices are often much cheaper here than in France or Austria!

The slopes

When I arrived in Cervinia, I’d only skied twice. Thankfully, this resort is perfect for beginners. If it’s your first time on the mountain or you’re wanting to build up your confidence, start the day on the bubble lift to Plan Maison. This is where all the ski schools start and puts you within easy reach of some cruisy blues. Blue 5 runs back into town, giving you plenty of time to practice those turns. Once you’ve conquered the blues, turn your attention to my favourite run, Red 7. It winds all the way from the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise to town.

My best advice would be to buy a local lift pass, which covers Cervinia and the neighbouring village of Valtournenche. You can then buy a day pass if you want to ski across to Zermatt. As the border is often closed due to high winds, you’ll save yourself money doing it this way! The runs on the Swiss side are slightly more challenging, so I’d recommend heading over later in the week, or if you’re more experienced. Look out for Red 69, which is usually nice and quiet and more than delivers on scenic drama. Keep an eye on the time though, take it from someone who knows... it’s a very expensive taxi back to Cervinia if you miss the last lifts!

The après

It may be small in size, but it more than makes up for it in après activities. On the mountain, Love Cervinia was one of our regular haunts. Come for the juicy burgers and Aperol spritz, stay for the daily DJ sets. Off the mountain, there’s an array of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a drink or two. Tucked away on the main street, Lo Copa Pan serves up local delights alongside live music. Metzelet Bar Ristorante does great fondue, while Lino’s pizzas are prime post-ski fuel. When you’re not wining and dining, there’s ice skating, dog-sledding, snowmobiling and more to get stuck into!

Looking for more laidback than lively? Unclip and unwind at the Hotel White Angel’s spa and wellness centre. The mountain views are reason enough to visit, but the heated swimming pool, whirlpool and endless list of tranquil treatments only add to the appeal.
