Beyond the city: Explore the Atlas Mountains in Morocco

The Atlas Mountains in Morocco are one of the most epic natural sights to behold while you’re abroad in North Africa. Peak-ed your interest yet? Thought so...

Known as the 'Red City’ for its rich, rosy glows and blush hues, Marrakech is a colourful pick for a Jet2CityBreak. Historical sites, gorgeous gardens amid the buzz, brimming-full souks... There’s so much to unearth here! And you won’t want to put your fork down when you see what delights are on the menu. But if you’re more into your outdoorsy exploring, turn your attention to the Atlas Mountains instead...

The astonishing Atlas Mountains

Located in majestic Morocco, stretching right across the country, the Atlas Mountains are doing wonders for showing off what Mother Nature can cook up. And in under two hours, you can reach the foothills from central Marrakech. In other words, full-day trips are well and truly on the horizon. Although the Middle Atlas and Anti-Atlas form part of this area, the High Atlas are really worth going to – home to the tallest, most popular trekking routes. There, you’ll find North Africa’s (and the Atlas Mountains’) highest peak, Mount Toubkal! Cameras at the ready, people.

How to experience them

We recommend booking the ‘High Atlas Mountains and Three Valleys 4X4’ experience if you’re after the best Atlas Mountains day trip from Marrakech. You could do this in Manage My Booking. On it, you’ll embark on a journey through a trio of breathtaking valleys. It’s a seriously spectacular tour, as you'll pass enchanting waterfalls and charming villages as you make your way through the region. Get ready to tick off the Ourika and Oukaimeden valleys, as well as a traditional Berber village! The final stop? Asni, where you'll visit the jaw-dropping plot and its surroundings, before stopping to be served a refreshing mint tea. It doesn’t get much more local than that.

When to go

Handily, you can fly year-round with us to Marrakech from Birmingham, London Stansted and Manchester, and Glasgow Airport as of October 2025. But the optimal months to hit this part of Morocco are between March and May, and September and November. It’s just a bit cooler then, but still fab for the scenery and all-important holiday pics. You may find summer just a bit too hot for hiking in the Atlas Mountains!

Psst, did you know that this part of Morocco is renowned for skiing in winter too? Although we don’t offer ski flights here, you can still soar into Marrakech that time of year if you fancy a cooler escape that’s still warmer than home.

Top tips

Most holidaymakers flock to the mountains from inner-city Marrakech, and booking a guide or an experience through our trusted provider just makes life so much easier – everything’s taken care of. Not to mention, you'll learn more key info. Visiting or even buying goods there can be a great way to support local businesses as well.

When it comes to packing, you’ll be relieved to have 22kg baggage and 10kg hand luggage included! Be sure to put in appropriate and respectful clothing, as well as comfy walking shoes if you’re trekking up Morocco’s Mount Toubkal (rather than just taking it all in). And maintaining solid fitness levels is wise too – just so you're prepared for the walks, inclines and altitude.
