Built in the 1960s as part of the Winter Olympics, this hidden gem knows a thing or two about snow-centric stays. From Chamrousse 1700’s beginner-friendly green slopes to Chamrousse 1650 and 1750’s intermediate-ready reds, this ski area has your back – whatever your age or level. The Sunset Park is the perfect playground for boarders, and there’s even a family area for the dinkiest daredevils.

Les 7 Laux

Distance from Grenoble airport: 88km

Ski-able terrain: 120km 

One of the closest resorts to Grenoble is the ski area of Les 7 Laux, nestled within the Belledonne mountain range. It’s made up of three villages, each offering something a little different. Prapoutel is the largest, with a handful of hotels, restaurants and bars to its name. But it’s the Oakley 7 Laux snow park which has really put this resort on the map for thrill-seekers. It’s split into four difficulty levels, with rails, boxes and so much more to tackle.

Alpe d’Huez

Alpe d’Huez boasts the bragging rights to snow-sure slopes, one of Europe’s longest black runs and a bounty of buzzing après bars. The resort itself is a higgledy-piggledy mix of architectural styles, with a range of accommodation options to suit every style and budget. On the mountain, there’s an extensive network of nursery runs for first-timers, as well as two snow parks and 50kms of cross-country trails. And when the piste bashers call time on your day on the slopes, there’s an indoor climbing wall, open-air ice rink and outdoor and indoor swimming pool to keep you occupied.

When it comes to ski holidays, Les Deux Alpes has a few aces up its sleeves. We’re talking almost guaranteed snow cover and the largest skiable glacier in Europe. You don’t have to be a piste pro to enjoy the knockout views here, thanks to the ski area’s unusual layout, with the wider slopes at the top of the mountain rather than the bottom. Freestylers flock to the snow park and there’s dogsledding, tobogganing and snow-biking on the agenda for non-skiers.

Serre Chevalier

Nothing beats a bluebird day and Serre Chevalier enjoys more than most, with 300 days of sunshine a year. Briancon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Monêtier les Bains make up the resort’s quartet of villages, which charm with their authentic French feel. The terrain is varied, spanning everything from pine-lined trails to powder-filled bowls. Refuelling on tartiflette oozing gooey reblochon cheese and baked-to-perfection blueberry tart is sure to be a holiday highlight.

La Clusaz

This cute-as-a-button resort combines classic alpine looks with modern facilities. It checks all the right boxes for families: quiet slopes, excellent ski schools and plenty of off-slope activities. Purchase an Aravis ski pass and you can rack up some serious mileage exploring the surrounding areas of Le Grand-Bornand, Manigod and Saint-Jean-de-Sixt. And the good times don’t stop when the lifts do, as rustic restaurants and cosy cocktail bars beckon.
