Spain

Skiing in Spain? Yep, it’s possible! In fact, purpose-built resorts and modern lift systems are easy to come by. As it’s further south, you’ll benefit from longer ski days than in the Alps too!

Port del Comte

Distance from Barcelona Airport: 142km

This sweet ski area may be small in size, but it’s got bags of charm. The 45km of pistes are split across two areas, and your ski level will help you narrow down where to go. The Hotel-Sucre area is accessible for all abilities, thanks to its wide runs and snow park. L’Estivella tends to appeal to more seasoned skiers, who are comfortable on both red and black runs. Off the slopes, tuck into trinxat, a hearty combination of fried potato, cabbage and bacon.

La Molina

Distance from Barcelona Airport: 155km

La Molina, found in the province of Girona, was one of the venues for the 2011 Alpine Skiing World Cup – so you know you’re in good hands! It sits at an altitude of 1700m, with lifts topping out at 2445m. Thrill-seekers will be impressed by the biggest super-pipe in the Pyrenees too! Alone, it boasts 68km of runs, but this jumps up to 121km when combined with the neighbouring resort of Masella. The two resorts are connected by a high-speed chairlift, so it couldn’t be easier to tick off both spots.

Andorra

Sandwiched between France and Spain, Andorra has a lot to offer skiers and snowboarders. We’re talking great-value accommodation, slope-side bars, wide runs and efficient lifts. Grandvalira’s the biggest ski area, linking the popular resorts of Pas de la Casa and Soldeu.

Pas de la Casa

Distance from Barcelona Airport: 195km

The buzzing après scene and bounty of bars and restaurants attract the night owls to Pas de la Casa, but it’s so much more than just a party plot. It’s the country’s highest resort, which means it’s your safest bet for snow. Plus, it’s the only resort in the area with direct access to the slopes, so you can ski right back to town. And did we mention you’ll have access to 210km of piste?

Soldeu

Distance from Barcelona Airport: 205km

Swish Soldeu welcomes everyone from first-timers to families. After a little luxury? Well, you’re in luck! There are plenty of high-end hotels here, offering fab amenities like spas and kids’ clubs. Hop on the TC8 Soldeu gondola, then see where the day takes you. If you’re feeling brave, you could even take on the black-labelled Avet run, renowned for testing the pros in numerous World Cup races.

El Tarter

Distance from Barcelona Airport: 208km

This small town is the resort of choice for novices. There’s a fab beginner’s area, as well as gentle blue slopes, so you can snowplough or ‘pizza and chips’ in peace. Once you’ve built up your confidence, head higher up the mountain and you’ll unlock some more challenging reds. The Andorran après doesn’t disappoint either, with sun-soaked terraces and live music to keep you occupied.
