While The Sound of Music ripples around the clifftop fortress in this baroque Austrian city, an array of chefs are cooking up a storm to capture people’s taste buds. So, between checking out the home of Mozart and admiring the verdant landscapes, you’ll want to delve into the local cuisine. But where to go, you ask? Let us direct you to a handful of restaurants that you’ll want to stay a little while longer in…
The Glass Garden
Foodies who are after a Michelin-starred experience in Salzburg will want to make a reservation at The Glass Garden. This restaurant isn’t just a treat for the taste buds – it’s also a sight to behold. Wind your way up Am Mönchsberg Street and you’ll be greeted by the terracotta structure that provides stunning city views. Inside, The Glass Garden is exquisite, and its name makes sense when you realise the restaurant mirrors the frame of a greenhouse! Choose between a four or six-course menu and indulge in delicately crafted plates of back and belly pork with wild garlic and crispy potatoes, crème fraîche filled gnocchi and green almond cheesecake.
Esszimmer
Just a stone’s throw from The Glass Garden, you’ll find another Michelin-starred restaurant, Esszimmer. With gleaming white cloth-covered tables, vibrant local artwork scattered across the walls inside and impeccable service, it’s easy to see why this restaurant was recognised as one of the very best and awarded it’s first Michelin star in 2025. Run by husband and wife, Andreas and Andrea, you’re welcomed to Esszimmer for an experience to remember. A three-course lunch or seven-course dinner menu is available, consisting of staples like Salzburg shrimp served with macadamia nuts, wild garlic pigeon with asparagus, vegetarian dumplings, and grapefruit panna cotta.
Weiherwirt
When dinner with a view is what you’re after, you’ll want to make a beeline for Weiherwirt. Located in southern Salzburg, and perched on the edge of the Leopoldskroner lake, this restaurant provides the perfect vantage point across the water to Leopoldskroner Palace. Whether you came for the scenery or have made this a must-visit for the culinary experience, you won’t regret venturing here. The chef combines the main ingredient of seafood beautifully with the traditional Austrian cuisine. So, you can expect plates of fresh trout, crayfish and prawns, as well as plates like tender beef steaks and beef tartare.
Zum fidelen Affen
If you’re heading to Salzburg, we’re assuming you’ve got Mozart’s former residence on your to-see list. And you’re in luck, because once you’ve explored this historic Austrian site, you’re just a street away from the divine Zum fidelen Affen. This inn-styled, family-run restaurant has been feeding tourists and locals a like for 40 years! The outdoor seating area becomes a Scandinavian oasis in the warmer months, so you can fill up on Salzburg soup, a traditional schnitzel with a pumpkin seed oil dressing or the restaurant’s staple, monkey steak. That’s pork loin with tomatoes, courgettes cheese and cured ham.
Johanneskeller
Opened in 2013, this traditional eatery has been dubbed one of the best places to visit for Austrian cuisine. Winner of the Traveller’s Choice award on Tripadvisor last year, it’s easy to see why people return to this lovely spot, just off the River Salzach. The menu may be on the smaller side, but when the breaded pork loin, beef bourguignon with homemade dumplings, and oven-roasted chicken fillet are done this delectably, you’ll be glad there’s not more you have to decide between!
Augustiner Braustübl
While not technically a restaurant, this brewery is a piece of Salzburg history, so it’s earned a special mention. At the foot of the Mönchsberg Mountain, the Bräustübl Tavern and Brewery is Austria’s largest brewery, with 1,400 seats in the outdoor beer garden. It’s no wonder this place has been going strong for 400 years! You’ll also find food festivals, garden barbecues and different food vendors pop up too – so you won’t be going hungry.
