O Thanasis
You couldn’t be blamed for thinking this bustling spot just off Monastiraki Sqaure is a tourist trap, what with its central location and heavy footfall. But make no mistake – this well-loved restaurant serves up some of the tastiest food in the city. And it’s great value too! You can’t go wrong with a fresh Greek salad to start, which comes topped with a slab of crumbly feta. For the main event, opt for the Yogourtlu ‘Thanasis’ Kebab – three juicy kebabs served on a bed of warm pita and smothered in rich tomato sauce and signature house yoghurt.

Kosta Souvlaki
Central location, cheap prices and tasty food – this no-frills eatery ticks all the boxes! The menu is simple too, with pork or beef in a pitta, plus fresh tomatoes, red onion and oh-so tasty fries. Plus, it’s drizzled with a red, spicy sauce for a Kosta’s twist on the normal tzatziki. It gets busy, so make sure you get down early to bag a spot in the queue.

The Traditional
Like its name, this charming restaurant is all about authentic Greek food and friendly service. Don’t miss their masterful meats like tender souvlaki and spit-roasted lamb kleftiko, along with all the favourite Greek classics like moussaka and creamy tzatziki. Make sure you go with empty bellies – the portions are generous, with flavours that leave a long-lasting impression on the taste buds.
Feyrouz
Swap Mediterranean for Middle Eastern at this restaurant-come-patisserie. From small plates to perfectly cooked pastries, everything’s bursting with Levantine flavours. It’s a family affair, with the restaurant named after the owner’s mother, who serves up handmade pies, spiced rice dishes and soups with serious soul. There are even vegan versions of the lahmatzun and peinirli, so no one misses out. Make sure you save room for dessert!

Tylixto
With two locations in the city, it’s even easier to snap up a perfectly stuffed pitta. Along with souvlaki made just how you like it, you’ll also find salads, skewers, falafel, halloumi and fries on the menu.
Orizontes
For dinner with a side of sensational views, it has to be Orizontes. Perched on Lycabettus Hill, this elegant spot offers sweeping panoramas of Athens, which are best enjoyed at sunset with a glass of Greek wine in hand. The menu is rooted in Greek tradition and offers carefully curated set menus, along with an à la carte, so you can savour everything from sumptuous sea bream to soft slivers of carpaccio.

The New Era Authentic Greek Cuisine
Tucked away in the heart of Athens, The New Era Authentic Greek Cuisine serves up traditional favourites with a modern twist. Expect hearty portions, warm hospitality and a menu packed with bold Mediterranean flavours. The fried feta cheese is a must – wrapped in thin, crispy pastry, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with sesame seeds, it’s the perfect balance of salty, sweet and crunchy. Cool off inside or pull up a pew in the colourful courtyard and get ready to tuck into some authentic dishes.
