The chic capital of Funchal is known for its lively harbour, fascinating sights and diverse culture. Start with the Madeira Botanical Garden, one of the city’s must-see sites. There are 80,000m2 of public gardens for you to explore hand in hand, including the cactus garden and the colourful checkerboard flowers that overlook the marina.
If you fancy upping the tempo, then head to Pico Ruivo, one of the best hiking spots on the island. The highest peak in Madeira, it can only be reached on foot via a winding path. The stunning sunrises and sunsets certainly make the uphill walk worthwhile.
Marbella
If it’s glitz and glamour you’re after, Marbella is the place for you – it’s known for hosting some of Spain’s most elite and exclusive. Nestled on the Costa del Sol, this enticing city features tranquil beaches, prestigious bars and restaurants and a whole host of stunning landscapes.
The high-end Puerto Banús marina is backed by designer shops and lined with superyachts and luxury sports cars. It’s also a popular celebrity hangout, so don’t be surprised if you spot some stars. Fancy a day trip? Hop on the tram to the inland town of Sóller and admire a vibrant valley filled with olive, lemon and orange groves along the way. From here, you can travel further to the island’s capital on a vintage train. Palma, in itself, is a fascinating city but the mountain views you’ll see on the journey are second to none.
Vilamoura
