Costa Brava

The mercury hovers around a pleasant 20°C in this slice of Spanish coastline during May. Come to the Costa Brava for Catalan culture aplenty, wildly beautiful scenery and genteel seaside towns. Fall into the go-slow pace of the region during May at Tossa de Mar. This beauty queen boasts a sickle-shaped bay blanketed in golden sand, flanked by a medieval castle on one side. Weave your way up the cobbled streets of the old quarter and seek out one of the al fresco tapas bars. While you tuck into grilled prawns and plump olives, gaze out across to the Med lapping at the shore below.

Lanzarote

Looking for a beach-orientated destination? Lanzarote may be the perfect match in May. Little wonder that this destination is a perennial hit, thanks to the beaches fringing the island. Some are coated in inky-hued volcanic sands, others carpeted in those so white they could be from the Caribbean. Find your perfect patch and feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, thanks to the glorious average 24°C climate at this time of year. Beyond the beaches, there are plenty of activities to get stuck into before the heat gets too much in later months. Surfing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking – take your pick!

Cyprus

Think Cyprus, think beaches – silky stretches of golden sand with sapphire waves gently breaking against the shore. A far-flung island in the eastern Med, it enjoys a balmy climate all-year-round, which climbs to a lovely 24°C during May. Spend your holiday exploring its top coastal spots before unlocking a different side to Cyprus – its heritage. History is woven deeply into this island and you can trace it through the monasteries, castles and tombs peppered throughout its cities. If nature’s more your thing, Larnaca Flower Parade during May celebrates the season’s newly-blossomed flora in a riot of scents and sounds.

Sorrento

Plot an adventure though charming Sorrento. At this time of the year, it’s slowly awakening from its spring slumber. Base yourself in the coastal city and use it as a launchpad for discovering the rest of the Amalfi Coast – it delivers the Italian dream. Lazy seafood dinners by the water, leisurely ambles among pastel-tinged buildings clinging to the cliffside, drives along roads that wind through sleepy villages. That’s what you can expect. Positano, Ischia and Ravello are among the region’s heavyweights to add to your must-see list, while Pompeii is a top-billed ancient attraction.

Crete

Ready, set, relax, with a break to Crete. This tranquil island is the perfect place to live out your Greek fantasy come May. The mild climate is a joyful break from Blightly’s cooler climes and the seasonal produce tastes deliciously fresh. Mingle with locals at late night bougainvillea-clad trattorias and head off the beaten track to discover hidden coves where you can stretch out on the sand. A treasure trove of history can be found here too, ranging from the pretty Venetian harbour of Chania to the centuries-old Palace of Knossos.

Malta

Ancient history and stunning beaches are reasons enough to book a break to Malta. But there’s even more grounds to go here when you take a look at the May events line-up. This month, it’s all about the music. Annie Mac Presents: Lost & Found Festival is the one for ravers, while the Malta International Music Festival offers recitals and concerts for classical music fans. Spend days swimming in glittering lagoons and evenings listening to performances from world-class artists.
