Hiking and tobogganing in Madeira

If you like the sound of year-round sunshine (who doesn’t?) and want to enjoy it while taking to the trails, then Madeira is the place for you. This frost-free island stays around 15-18°C, even during the winter months. But, always come prepared for the odd turn in weather, because even Madeira’s climate can be unpredictable!

You’ll find yourself enchanted by spectacular routes through forests and ancient water channels, and you’re bound to stumble upon some island gems, like Risco waterfall – the crystal waters will make you feel like you’ve hiked to a hidden oasis.

If you’re prepared for a challenge, Pico Ruivo is one of the most famous hiking routes on the island. Elevated at 1,861m, it’s Portugal’s third highest peak and it’s the perfect opportunity to bring your camera to capture jaw-dropping views at the top.

The whole island offers plenty of walks, with family-friendly terrain and a variety of beginner trails to explore. So, lace up your boots and make Madeira your next mission.

While you’re on the island, why not delve into the tradition of tobogganing? The Monte Toboggan offers the coolest commute in Madeira! The 2km ride travels up to 30km/h, and you get to experience how the residents of Madeira used to get between Monte and Funchal!

Cycling in Majorca

The Tramuntana mountain range is home to exceptional cycle routes, with twisting trails and coastal paths that are bound to get your wheels spinning. Puig Major, Sa Calobra and Cap de Formentor are all found within the 138km stretch of calf-testing climbs to conquer.

There are magnificent routes across all of Majorca, but the 110km stretch between Pollensa and Andratx is a must-do! Weaving through mountainside villages, you’ll get to savour the sight of Sóller, pass the delightful village of Deià and the charming town of Valldemossa before freewheeling down to Andratx to finish.

The varied terrain of Majorca makes for competitive climbs or gentle stretches, so you’re not limited in your choice. With flatter terrains found at the south of the island, this isn’t just a destination for the pros. Palma Nova is the place to head for gentle gradients, great for beginners and youngsters. Touring on two wheels has never been more family-friendly!

Golfing in the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol spans 159km of Spanish coastline, and has become a popular pick for European golfing. Nestled away in Sotogrande, you’ll find one of the world’s best golf clubs, Valderrama. This 18-hole championship course is just one of many prestigious clubs in the area. La Reserva and San Roque are also highly rated, and the Andalusian climate makes for perfect putting conditions.

Malaga is another hotspot for golfing. Clubs here, such as Chaparral and La Cala, sit on the coastline, so breathtaking views accompany each round. Don’t get too lost on the fairway though, because Malaga boasts one of the best food scenes in the region! You’ll want to ace your last hole and get out for tapas to end your day.

If you’re after golf by day and partying by night, Marbella and Puerto Banus offer a playground of luxury. Practise your swing in the sunshine at Finca Cortesin or La Quinta, and when night falls, head to some of the most luxurious bars on Marbella’s Golden Mile.

Surfing in the Algarve

The Algarve’s a surfer’s paradise, because the waves remain swell all year round! So, if you’re wanting to avoid the hustle and bustle of the summer, you’re not limited by the seasons. Sagres takes the crown as the most popular surf destination in the Algarve. With the west and south coastlines meeting here, consistent breaks and versatile waves make it perfect for all abilities. The stronger waves are usually found in the south, so if you’re a beginner, locations such as Mareta or Martinhal Beach offer some comfortable pockets to surf.

National Park exploring in Croatia

Protected land areas in Croatia make up 9% of the whole country, so it’s safe to say this Balkan beauty has some real gems hidden under its belt. Hosting eight national parks and 11 nature parks, Croatia really is the perfect getaway for walking enthusiasts.

Each one offers its own experience – Krka National Park has a deep canyon cutting straight through the mountain range, Mljet National Park boasts two saltwater lakes, and Kornati National Park has a breathtaking collection of 150 islands and islets.

Plitvice Lakes National Park, however, may be the pick of the bunch. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest national park in Croatia, this centrally located spectacle is superb. Boasting crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic within its lakes and waterfalls, dense forests and diverse wildlife, there couldn’t be a dreamier walking location.
