The largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, Tenerife is a massive hit with sun-seekers. With long stretches of beach and a year-round balmy climate, it provides the perfect setting for a relaxing getaway.
There are more than 50 beaches dotted around the island, so you’ll be spoilt for choice when deciding where to spend your days. The sand varies from yellowy-gold to deep volcanic black, but don’t let this put you off! Some of the best beaches can be found to the north and west of the island and feature these unique, inky shores.
If stretching out on a sun lounger isn’t really your thing, there’s a huge variety of exciting water sports, snorkelling and boat trip opportunities at these beaches. Beachfront bars and restaurants aren’t in short supply either, with tasty food and refreshing drinks to keep you cool.

1. Playa de las Teresitas
On the north of the island, close to Santa Cruz, this palm-lined golden beach stretches for 1.5km. There’s a warm sea breeze and the shallow waters make it a safe place for the whole family. Why not join the locals in a yoga class or game of volleyball?
2. Playa de la Arena
Sitting pretty on the western coast, Playa de la Arena is the place to go if you’re looking for somewhere a little more slower-paced. Its distinct black sand stands out against the bright-blue waters and the volcanic rocks that surround the beach are a popular spot for scuba divers.
Feeling hungry post-swim? The laid-back promenade is the ideal place to stop for a spot of lunch with numerous family-run cafes and restaurants.
3. Playa de la Tejita
Earning Blue Flag status, Playa de la Tejita is in a prime location next to the Montaña Roja nature reserve. This local haunt is a haven away from the busier, tourist-filled beaches and towards the end of the bay, you’ll find a small area that’s popular with naturists. Plus, the strong winds and moderate Atlantic waves mean surfing and wind surfing are great options here if you’re after a bit of excitement.
4. El Médano
With views of the Montaña Roja volcano and boasting ideal swimming conditions, El Médano is one of the most popular beaches in southern Tenerife. The grey sands have been awarded Blue Flag status and the surrounding beach promenade is filled with shops, bars and restaurants. As well as windsurfing and kitesurfing, it’s also a popular kite-flying area – you’ll likely spot colourful crafts dancing in the breeze here.
5. Playa Jardin
On the coast of the lively Puerto de la Cruz resort, Playa Jardin’s dark sands are great for all the family. Technically three separate beaches, featuring Castillo Beach, Charcón Beach and Punta Brava Beach, there’s plenty of options when it comes to finding that perfect relaxing spot.
Designed by famous Canarian artist, César Manrique, this man-made beach is surrounded by colourful botanical gardens and lined with palm trees. On a clear day, enjoy picturesque views of the neighbouring Mount Teide.
6. Playa de las Vistas
Located right on the border between the lively resorts of Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos, this Blue Flag beach is a hub of activity. There’s a huge variety of cafes and restaurants along the promenade and a couple of snack bars on the beach serving cooling drinks.
There’s also lots of choice when it comes to sun loungers and the sea defences at each end of the bay make the water extremely calm – perfect for little ones!
7. Playa de Los Cristianos
The former fishing village of Los Cristianos is home to a vibrant harbour and man-made beach with pristine yellow sand. Next to Playa de las Vistas, it’s in a great location for bars and restaurants and thriving nightlife. And if it’s water sports you’re after, this beach is also a popular sport for snorkelling and scuba diving.
8. Playa Fanabe
Nestled on Tenerife’s southern coast, this golden stretch is a family-favourite, and with its perfect paddling conditions, fabulous facilities and plethora of beachfront cafés it’s easy to see why. At the northern end of the beach, there’s a grassy area which is perfect for a seaside picnic – no sandy sandwiches here! There’s also great disabled access with sloped walkways.
9. Playa Del Duque
This tranquil spot in Costa Adeje flies the Blue Flag with pride. Lounge in the St. Tropez-style beach huts or relax under the rainbow-coloured parasols. And when it’s time to cool off, the crystal-clear waters are perfect for a dip. The palm-tree lined promenade is ideal for a seaside stroll and is dotted with designer boutiques and bustling bars.
