Introducing Skopelos... this colourful, pine-covered island was catapulted to fame in 2007, when it was chosen as the filming location for the hit film Mamma Mia.
Located in the western Aegean Sea and with a 67km-long coastline, it’s easy to see why this little island is growing in popularity. If you’re looking for a little piece of paradise, look no further. The ‘Green and Blue Island’ of Greece certainly lives up to its name. Here are the best beaches…
Panormos Beach
This pebbled paradise is nestled in a sheltered bay and within easy reach of Skopelos Town. Don your snorkel as Panormos’ deep-blue waters make this an ideal place for spotting some native marine life. If all that swimming has made you hungry, there are plenty of traditional tavernas that line the shore and they’re perfect for sampling some Greek cuisine.
Kastáni Beach
Taking centre stage is Kastani beach. Its starring role in the hit film Mamma Mia makes this a must-see when visiting Skopelos. If you don’t fancy belting out a rendition of ‘Does, your mother know,’ you can always grab a drink at the beach bar or swim in the crystal-clear waters instead. If that Greek heat gets a little too much, the lush-green pine trees that wind up to the shore provide some much-needed natural shelter from the sun.
Hovolo Beach
Down the road from Neo Klima village, is this natural beauty. If you’re after some R&R then Hovolo beach is just the ticket. Peace and quiet comes at a little cost though, the path down can be a little rocky, so wear some sturdy shoes. Finally, make sure you pack a picnic and plenty of water to stay hydrated as you won’t find any shops or cafes here.
Milia Beach
Just a stone’s throw away from Kastani is neighbouring Milia Beach. This long, sandy stretch has a much calmer vibe than is neighbour Kastani, so you’re in prime position to pull out that beach read. See if you can spot the nearby Island of Dassia - legend has it there’s hidden treasure in one of the caves.
Heads up! This little piece of paradise can often be subject to some strong winds, so hold on to your hats. Don’t worry, you can always take shelter in the beach's tiny taverna which serves an array of Greek goodies.
Agios Ioannis Beach
A small beach with a huge reputation. And another film location chosen by the producers of Mamma Mia, and we can’t blame them. Overlooking the beach and the crystal-clear Aegean waters is the iconic church of Agios Ioannis Kastri, featured in the film. If you fancy following in Meryl Streeps’ footsteps, you can climb the almost 200 steps up to the top or simply admire from the serene waters below.
