Dreaming of long stretches of beach with sapphire waves lapping against the golden sand? You’ve hit the jackpot here in Sicily. Or how about a secluded hideaway backed by ochre-coloured cliffs? From the super-lively to the more laidback, whatever a day at the beach looks like for you, Sicily has you covered.
Towel and sunnies at the ready! Here are just a few of our favourites…
Isola Bella Bay, Taormina
Staying in Taormina? This will be right on your doorstep. You can take the steps all the way down to the shore or hop on the cable car and be on the sand in no time. This pebbled plot has a natural and wild feel to it, framed by lush vegetation and rocky outcrops.
The beach is split in two by a small strip of sand which leads to Isola Bella, a dinky island that looks like it’s been plucked from a fairytale. Grab a drink from one of the waterfront cafés, before rolling out your towel to soak up those balmy Italian rays. One thing to note – the walkway disappears at high tide, so be sure to pack sensible shoes!
Cefalu Beach, Cefalu
Dominated by La Rocca, a small, rocky mountain, this blissful beach is the perfect plot to while away a day in the rays. The crescent-shaped shore stretches right around the bay which provides plenty of space to spread out and unwind. It does tend to get quite busy during the summer months though, so be sure to get down early to bag the best sunbathing spot!
At one end of the beach, you’ll find the spectacular Old Town which is a treasure trove of historical spots, including Cefalu Cathedral, quaint boutiques and traditional Sicilian restaurants. It’s just great for when you fancy a break from the sand!
Letojanni Beach, Letojanni
Want somewhere a little more understated and loved by the locals? Make a beeline for Letojanni’s wild and rugged sand and shingle beach. It stretches for several kilometres along the entire length of the resort.
You can choose to hire a lounger and umbrella from one of the many lido sections or simply lay your towel down on the shore and soak up those warm Italian rays. Nearby cafés and seafood restaurants are on hand when hunger strikes.
Giardini Naxos Beach, Giardini Naxos
For somewhere with a bit more hustle and bustle, it’s all about Giardini Naxos Beach. The street behind the beach is lined with all-day dining venues and plenty of quirky bars and beach clubs, so you’ll never be too far away from those all-important refreshments.
The shore itself stretches the length of Naxos Bay, so you won’t be short on space when it comes to finding that ideal sunbathing spot. Simply relax with a book, head out on a boat trip or pay for a spot at one of the beach clubs and order cocktails straight from your lounger. At night it looks stunning too, with the lights from bars above reflecting on the water.
