Kitzbühel
Distance from Salzburg Airport: 73km
Known as Glitzy Kitz, there’s no shortage of boutiques and bars here. It’s particularly lively during January’s Hahnenkamm races weekend, but there’s always a good atmosphere, no matter when you visit. Kick off your afternoon with a pint at Pavillon, then make a beeline for the Londoner. This Irish-style pub has been a staple on the scene since the 1970s, and there’s often live music on throughout the season. Beyond the bars, there’s a casino, bowling alley and cinema to uncover.
Zell am See
Distance from Salzburg Airport: 76km
With its charming old town and lakeside setting, Zell am See’s a contender for the country’s prettiest ski resort and that’s just the start of its draws. After a busy day working your way across the piste map, unclip and unwind at one of the many bars. Pull up a pew at a slopeside spot like SchnapsHans-Alm or Breiteckalm and enjoy a drink in the sunshine. Back in town, you’ll find a flurry of people flocking to Villa Crazy Daisy for authentic Austrian dishes and live tunes. For a more low-key evening, why not head to the ice rink and cheer on the local team?
Saalbach
Distance from Salzburg Airport: 86km
Close your eyes and picture a traditional alpine village and it’s Saalbach’s timber buildings and domed church that’ll come to mind. More than 30 bars and a handful of nightclubs mean it’s a hit with party-hard skiers and boarders. The fun starts at around 3pm and continues into the early hours. Pop Off-Piste bar on your radar — singers perform here every night of the week! And you can’t leave without checking out Castello. The resort’s first ever club has been welcoming people through its doors since 1970.
Söll
Distance from Salzburg Airport: 70km
Part of one of the largest linked ski areas in Austria, Söll’s an all-round gem. Although the après scene has mellowed in recent years, there’s still plenty of places to party, if you know where to look. We’re talking spots like the Moonlight Bar and Hexenalm. Looking for something more leisurely? Grab your skates and whizz around the outdoor ice rink. There are lots of restaurants serving up Tyrolean treats too.
