Ever wondered how we get the fantastic food and product snaps that you see in our onboard mags? Well, wonder no more! We’re giving you a sneak peek into what goes on behind the scenes. From artificial grass to smoke machines, so much planning goes into every page. Let’s take a look...

The ideas
A few months before the shoot, we schedule some calls with the agency team to discuss themes and ideas we want to include in the issue. Typically, we’re shown a few different options before we settle on the winner. For this edition, we loved the idea of giving Jet2shop a fairytale feel, coinciding with the release of iconic films like Wicked and Snow White. Everyone was really excited about bringing these visions to life as the creative scope both editorially and through the photography was huge!

The set
When the week of the shoot arrives, members of our Publications, Content and In-Flight Retail teams head to an undisclosed location to oversee every shot. The studio space is vast and decked out with cutting-edge technology and lighting to ensure every photo makes the maximum impact. Keeping with the whimsical theme, props included rustic spell books, potion bottles and dazzling crystals. My favourite? A set designed to look like a magical meadow, complete with real flowers hand-planted by the talented team.

The products
We’re always searching for trending products that we can add to our onboard portfolio, so you’ve got the best choice when browsing. Say hello to Cosmic 2.0 by Kylie Jenner, a refreshed take on her sell-out spritz. Bit of a cocktail connoisseur? Au Vodka Juicy Peach at your service. And you’ll want to add Benefit Playtint to your make-up must-haves. The pink lemonade-tinted lip and cheek stain gives an instant pop to any complexion. Don’t worry though – we’re still fans of the classics. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat, Jack Daniel’s Whiskey, Lancôme La Vie Est Belle... we’re looking at you!
Fun fact: Most watches that you see in magazines are all set to the same time, 10:10. Why? So you can see the brand names better!

That’s a wrap!
We take the time to make sure we’re happy with each shot before it’s re-touched for print and web and ready to use! From skincare to spirits, make-up to gifts, we cover it all. Once everything is approved, it’s down to me to work my wordsmith magic and craft some editorial to match each spread. We often shoot extra content for our late summer edition at the same time too. It’s a busy week for everyone involved but I love seeing people leafing through the finished product on the plane. Happy reading and shopping!
