The resort
Instead of the postcard-perfect cluster of chalets you might be used to from typical ski resorts, you'll find grand historic hotels and elegant buildings clinging dramatically to the mountainside above a tumbling waterfall here. A deep gorge runs through the middle of town, and you’ll spot lots of traditional Tyrolean taverns, bars and restaurants. When it comes to accommodation options, there’s everything from high-end hotels to chalet-style guesthouses on offer. The public transport links are fab too, so getting around (even in bulky ski boots!) is a doddle! And you don't need skis to enjoy Bad Gastein. Take in panoramic mountain views from the spectacular Stubnerkogel Hängebrücke suspension bridge, explore winter walking trails, enjoy snowshoeing excursions or simply relax in the thermal spas.
The slopes
The resort sits within the wider 198km Gasteinertal ski region, giving you access to extensive terrain, spread across several interconnected mountain areas. Beginner? There’s a nursery slope next to the gondola valley station, but many first-timers choose to take the free shuttle bus to Angertal instead.
Once you’ve got your ski legs, try out blue B21, a cruisy, pine-lined run that winds back to the valley. Intermediates will be spoilt for choice! Head up to the Graukogel peak and whizz down the long red or give the black on the Kreuzkogel mountain a go. Freestyle fanatic? There’s a small snow park on the Stubnerkogel mountain, where you can show off your tricks. You could even hire a guide and discover the area’s off-piste opportunities.
The après
When the lifts close for the day, Bad Gastein switches into après mode. Stop at Bellvue Alm on your way down the mountain, then gear up for live music galore back in town. Lederhosenbar is a long-standing fave, while the Silver Bullet Bar always draws a large crowd. Night owl? Stazione Blockhäusl is one of the few places that stays open until the early hours. Foodies will find plenty to please their taste buds too. There are around 50 restaurants to choose from, spanning Austrian, Asian, Mexican and more. If you’re in the mood for pizza, Jägerhausl is your best bet, and The Drop Inn’s great if burgers and craft beers are your idea of food heaven.
