A skier’s guide to the Italian Alps

Put Italian Alps skiing to the top of your list this winter and join us on a whistle-stop tour of where’s best to hit the slopes.

Europe’s highest, most extensive mountain range, the Alps, is quite the wonder to behold for skiers and snowboarders. It creates something of a dense wintry playground for various sports. Plus, combined with areas such as the Milky Way, Italian Alps skiing is well and truly on the radar of outdoorsy adventurers during the colder seasons.

If you’re a keen skier, daring snowboarder or simply want to learn the ropes on the slopes, heading over to Turin and the Italian Alps is well worth it for all abilities. Here’s a breakdown of five of our favourite resorts that make great bases for an all-thrills wintry retreat.

Alagna

Astonishing Alagna is a box-ticker if you’re up for a challenge. Thanks to its excellent powder both on and off-piste, you can bet that it’s brilliant for boarders as well as seasoned skiers. It’s got some epic vertical slopes too, so prepare for jaw-dropping views as you descend back into town. Although you’ll only have a few runs at your fingertips here, they’ll put you to the test and you’ll have properly earned your post-piste pint! What’s more, this rustic resort has Italian charm in spades.

Bardonecchia

Welcome to one of Italy’s quietest ski resorts, Bardonecchia. If you’re new to the snow, taking newbies along with you, or simply enjoy feeling the freedom on the slopes without interruption from wayward skiers, this is the place to be. It’s close to Turin Airport but very near to the French border too, meaning it’s an oh-so-pretty setting for some Instagram snaps. Gentle blue and green runs are ten-a-penny, while there’s a snowpark if you do suddenly crave a challenge. Save time to hit the ice rink, cinema and sports centre while you’re in town.

Pragelato

The pistes in Pragelato appeal to skiers across the board. You can bank on a great range of runs to suit everyone, whether it’ll be the first time you tread on snow or you’re a hardened pro with years of carving up the couloirs under your belt. This vast meadow is an icy wilderness of staggering hills and smooth flats alike, with clutches of cute timber chalets thrown into the mix. While you can take advantage of the variety on the snow, you can also book into handy ski schools if you need to brush up. As well as being great for Italian Alps skiing, it’s an area known for its herbal aperitifs. Up for après-ski? There’s bags on offer.

Sansicario

Feel in the middle of it all when you stay in Sansicario. Not only does it come up trumps for Italian Alps skiing, it’s also one of the biggest and most well-known resorts of the prestigious Milky Way ski area. While soft powder is the name of the game, you’ll also be privy to top terrain parks that have jumps and rails on hand if you’re keen to get the adrenaline pumping. The mountains in the region are also connected by monorail, which makes getting from A to B effective. When you simply want to kick back and unwind, potter around the characterful shops, feast in the pizzerias and maybe even hone another skill on the ice rink.

Pila

Last but not least, Pila is a stellar option for skiing in Italy. Head to the Aosta Valley – another winter sports favourite – and you’ll find petite Pila. Ski schools and fun parks combine to make this a smorgasbord of snow-capped excitement, plus you can expect a side order of wellness and atmospheric bars. But when your skis are on, this place prides itself on having a range of runs available to all levels of ability. This makes it a solid choice for families and for avid snowboarders as well. It’s an idyllic resort with Italian flair on display around every corner, so it’s another waiting to welcome winter retreat-seekers with open arms.
