On an island where nature greets you at every turn, it’s no surprise that some of the best things to do involve getting out and about in the great outdoors. And the best bit? Often you can do this without blowing your budget! You know what they say – the best things in life are free. So put away the purse, these activities in Madeira don’t cost a thing...

Hike the levadas
As far as affordable adventures go, hiking the island’s levadas is arguably the most rewarding. Lace up your walking boots and take to these picturesque pathways, which will give you a snapshot into Madeira’s stunning scenery. There’s a surprise in every step on the Levada do Rei, while the Levada do Barreiro delivers knockout views of Funchal. The Levada das 25 Fontes is one of the most famous, leading you to a place where 25 little waterfalls flow into a pool.

Explore the markets
Get a snapshot into Madeira’s food scene with a wander around one of the local markets. Mercado dos Lavradores is one of the most well-known, packed with fresh fruit, vegetables and so much more. Sometimes the stalls give out tasters too, so you can have a nibble of this and a nibble of that while you browse. We recommend trying the passionfruit, guava and prickly pear while you’re here.

Relax in Santa Catarina Park
When the sun has got its hat on, there’s no better place to soak up the rays than in Funchal’s Santa Catarina Park. There’s a children’s playground if you’re travelling with tots, as well as a sprawling lawn overlooking the port. You’ll spy both native and exotic flora flourishing here too. An afternoon well spent? We think so.

Tick off the stunning viewpoints
A pocket-friendly experience that promises panoramas to fill up your camera roll? We’ve got just the thing. Head to Ponto do Garajau at sunset and take in the vast views across the ocean. It’s just a quick bus ride from central Funchal and you’ll be a short walk from the Cristo Rei statue too. That means you can tick off two sights in one go.

Take a dip in the natural swimming pools
Get ready to make a splash in a unique swimming spot. The Cachalote natural swimming pools, formed by volcanic rocks, are free to access. At high tide, the water rises above the rocks, filling up the pools. There’s an outdoor shower but no changing facilities, so be sure to bring everything you need with you. There are other options, with more facilities, which you can visit for a small fee, like the Doca do Cavacas.
