1. Calas de Papagayo (Papagayo Beach)

Calas de Papagayo is revered as one of the best beaches in Lanzarote, thanks to its unspoilt beauty and vast turquoise waters. This cosy cove is uber family friendly with its bay-like landscape that provides plenty of natural shelter from Lanzarote’s winds.

Close to the sun-kissed resort of Playa Blanca, it’s accessible by either car or by foot. If you’re coming by car, it’s around three euros for parking, as it’s part of Lanzarote’s national park. The walk down is generally easy but there are no paved roads or paths here, so access is via the dirt track. Heads up! This a natural space, so stock up on plenty of snacks and water for the day, as you won’t find any shops here!

2. Playa Flamingo

The south of the island is home to the oh-so-enticing Playa Flamingo. Young families love the clean 200 metres of white sands and the clear, calm waters as it's perfect for tiny toes to go for a paddle too. It’s ideally placed for when the kids get peckish, with the palm-lined promenade running just behind the beach, you’re never far from an ice cream shop, or a café or restaurant.

Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for hire if you’re planning on camping out here for the day, as well a ramp for disabled and pram access, so it really is accessible for the whole family.

3. Parque Nacional de Timanfaya

A tour to the national park may not be suitable for tiny tots, but older kids will love this real-life geology lesson! Booking a guided tour is the perfect way to learn about the Mars-like landscape and the history of the national park. Kids will ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ at the live geothermic demonstrations and they’ll get the chance to uncover the secrets of its volcanic past and how the eruptions shaped the lunar landscape seen today.

If you need to refuel, there’s a café at the top of the volcano where you can dine with a difference – the food is cooked on the ground using only geothermal energy!

4. Browse the Sunday market in Costa Teguise

Every Sunday this northern town plays host to one of the best markets on the island. Tourists and locals alike flock here to browse the trinkets and treasures sold in the rows of stalls, and between the hours of 09:00 and 14:00, this sleepy town comes alive.

When you finish up meandering around the market stalls, you’ll find that the Old Town of Teguise still has plenty to offer. If everyone’s keen for a bite to eat, there are plenty of food stands within the market as well as local restaurants nearby.

5. Take a boat trip

There’s plenty of boat trips to hop on across the island, each offering something a little different.

A daytrip to the small island of La Graciosa should definitely be on the cards. This off-the-beaten-path island is a natural paradise, ideal for swimming, cycling and reconnecting with nature and it’s only half an hour away by ferry.

The options don’t stop there, there are catamarans with dolphin watching, sunset cruises or you can even do a spot of island hopping. If you fancy a fun-filled, pirate-themed boat trip, grab your mini pirates because Lanzarote has that too.
