Day one

Morning: Soak up the culture

Thessaloniki’s a multicultural melting point, showcasing fragments of many civilisations’ histories, so your sightseeing list is sure to be jam-packed. The 34m-tall White Tower is a great place to start, dating back to the 15th century. Pick up a free audio guide and learn about its fascinating past, then head up to the top for some of the best views in the city. Just around the corner you’ll find the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, which is stuffed with Hellenistic and Roman artefacts.

Afternoon: Enjoy some retail therapy

Get set for shopping splendour, with everything from designer boutiques to one-of-a-kind craft shops tucked down dinky side streets. Tsimiski Street hosts the city’s biggest range of shops, while Mitropoleos Street is better if you’re in the market for clothes and shoes. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the newly refurbished Agora Modiano for a quick bite on the go.

Evening: Try the local cuisine in the Ladadika district

UNESCO designated Thessaloniki as Greece’s first city of gastronomy in 2021, so it’s no surprise it’s fab for foodies. Head to the lively Ladadika district and take your pick of the traditional tavernas. Authentic dishes like soutzoukakia Smyrneika (meatballs flavoured with cumin and garlic) and bouyiourdi (baked feta cheese with tomato and peppers) are palate-pleasers!

Day two

Morning: Take a stroll along the Nea Paralia (waterfront promenade)

Kick off your day the Thessaloniki way with a freshly baked bougatsa (filo pastry pie). Bakeries dedicated to this tasty treat are two a penny, and you’ll find both savoury and sweet versions to try. Fuelled and ready to go, it’s time to check out the waterfront promenade. This area was completely renovated in 2014 and now boasts 13 parks – perfect for a morning meander.

Afternoon: Tick off more historical hotspots

Pop your history hat back on, as there’s so much more to see and do on day two. Venture to Aristotelous Square, the city’s cultural heart, and admire the grand architecture. Take advantage of the square’s central location to springboard to spots such as the Roman Forum, one of the oldest sites in Thessaloniki. The ancient theatre is the best-preserved ruin here and is often used as an outdoor concert venue in summer. The Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda, both dating back to the 4th century, are two more must-visits.

Evening: Snap some photos at golden hour

When the day winds down, in-the-know travellers make their way up to the 15th-century Trigonion Tower for a sunset spectacle like no other. Set high on a hill above the port, you’ll be blown away by the panoramas. Afterwards, cocktail-hop your way down Valaoritou Street, where you’ll find bars to suit all tastes and budgets. Stin Taratsa is a popular rooftop spot, known for its eclectic music and unique cocktails.
