The Costa Dorada’s friendly resorts and sparkling sandy beaches make it a top choice for families. Yet the varied range of sporting activities and cultural attractions means it’s ace for all ages. Here are just ten of the reasons you should add this holiday hotspot to your summer wishlist…

Alberich Fotògrafs Amphitheatre

1. Historical gems

If squeezing in the sights is as important as soaking up the sun, Tarragona is just the ticket. Spend your mornings unwinding on the beach, then carve out some time to visit UNESCO World Heritage spots like the seaside amphitheatre. It dates back to the second century! Hungry for more history? Follow the Cistercian Route, which includes Poblet Monastery, another with UNESCO’s stamp. It showcases a range of architectural styles, from Romanesque to Gothic, and it’s full of ornate sculptures.

2. Stunning beaches

Gold-as-they-come grains dominate the seafront, where you and the kids can create turreted sandcastles or flake out in the rays. One of the golden coast’s longest beaches is La Pineda Platja, while Cambrils boasts 9km of Blue Flag sandy shores and shallow waters. Salou serves families, friends and everything in between with its panoramic viewpoints and sweeping stretch of sand. Water sports more your thing? Nautic Parc covers nearly 81km of the region’s coast. The transparent waters are ideal for paddleboarding and snorkelling, but you could also go on a boat trip or rent a kayak.

3. Exciting attractions

No matter how old you are, this Costa favours fun. It’s non-stop action at PortAventura World, Spain’s biggest amusement park. It’s jam-packed with places for the whole family to discover, including the awe-inspiring PortAventura Theme Park, wonderfully watery Caribe Aquatic Park and high-octane Ferrari Land. In between all the adventures, parades and shows take place throughout the day. More of a waterpark whizz? Put Aquopolis on the agenda. When you’re not racing each other down the rapids or zooming your way down the slides, there’s a chill-out zone where you can enjoy some R&R.

4. Catalan culture

During the summer months, you might be lucky enough to catch a Catalan spectacle, which was born in the Costa Dorada in the 18th century. Recognised by UNESCO, castells are human towers formed by members of amateur groups. It’s a deeply rooted tradition and a common sight at fiestas and public events between April and October. Want to learn more about its fascinating heritage? The Museu Casteller de Catalunya in Valls is the place for you.

If you appreciate art and architecture, there’s no better place to be than Reus, Gaudí’s hometown. Head to the Gaudí Centre and unlock your creative flair at the modern museum with its interactive exhibitions. Then, take a walk through the city and admire modernist buildings like Casa Navàs or browse the shops. And you can’t visit the city without trying the local drink, vermouth (a type of fortified wine flavoured with botanicals). The Vermouth Route shines a spotlight on this classic aperitif.
